Two of Vandorens's best designs meet in the V21.
Vandoren has created the clarinet reed for the 21st Century. Incorporating the shape and thickness of the 56 Rue Lepic combined with the profile of the V12, the result is a reed that has tremendous clarity, warmth and depth. Boxes of 10, strengths 2.5 - 5.

This reed is exactly as Vandoren describes. I see it as a full size Blackmaster reed. The tone is dark and resonant. Sounds very clear in recordings. Projects extremely well while having core to the tone. I play traditional and V12 3 1/2. I have 3.5 in the V21 I might go down to 3.0 in strength but... Not sure. They take a little longer to break in but they seem like they will last a long, long time! I feel that players who play on closer mouthpieces will especially like these reeds. This is a great "hefty" reed!

I bought my first box of V21s a few weeks ago, and was disappointed. The woodwind consult I spoke to was very helpful in figuring out the correct strength that I needed, but I felt like the tip of the reeds were a bit more soft/mushier than expected. They are advertised as being dark and resonant, but I thought that there was a "woody" quality to the sound. On the upside of things, going through the box, I found them to be more consistently alike, so if you like them, I think you will get more that work per box. I am going to break a few of them in, and give them a chance. Maybe with a few adjustments, they will sound better. :)

Comments about Vandoren V21 Bb Clarinet Reeds:
Since I use #4 reeds in another brand, I thought the 3.75+ would work well for me. They're a bit too strong! I can work with them and use them, but it will take some effort. That's not necessarily a bad thing!
Comments about Vandoren V21 Bb Clarinet Reeds:
The V21's are probably the most consistent reeds I have found from Vandoren. The response is excellent throughout, especially the ability to play pianissimo in the altissimo register of the clarinet.

V21 is a very predictable reed. As many as 7/10 box are ready to play. Sound is very rich.

Comments about Vandoren V21 Bb Clarinet Reeds:
I have gone through 6 of the 10 reeds in this box and so far, every one of them has played well right out of the box. I have used V12s for years and have been frustrated with the fluctuations in strength and tone quality. I was usually only happy with maybe two reeds out of an entire box. With the V21's, I have been very impressed with the tone quality and responsiveness right out of the box. I will definitely be buying more of these!

Comments about Vandoren V21 Bb Clarinet Reeds:
These reeds tend to run slightly harder than the 56 line. They are consistent in the box and easy to pull out every reed to play on. The sound is great - nice and dark and warm.
Comments about Vandoren V21 Bb Clarinet Reeds:
No sandpepering. IMMEDIATELY playable
