Yamaha YBS-62II Professional Baritone Saxophone
OVERVIEW
Pro-quality baritone sax with included rollable case.
The Yamaha YBS-62II is Yamaha’s flagship professional baritone saxophone. For many, it is the holy grail of baritones. There are only a very few rivals to it on the market, and it is without doubt a “forever horn” of its type. Whether you are a multi-reed player or a baritone specialist, the 62II is a great option. It was introduced in 2020 as a replacement for the YBS-62, which enjoyed a reputation as a professional standard for 35 years. The redesign has preserved the playability that artists expect from a 62 while offering improvements in ergonomics and intonation.
The YBS-62 was introduced in 1982 in a typical Yamaha gamble. Most of the available baritone saxophones of the day were essentially gigantic altos that didn’t properly consider the role of the baritone sax. The YBS-62II combines Yamaha’s production and design expertise to offer a professional baritone at a manageable price. It is known for its response, intonation and most of all for its big, bold tone; a superior instrument for anchoring a large horn section.
Design and construction elements
The YBS-62II features a yellow brass body, neck, bell and key material. It has polyester key buttons, nickel-plated keys and a gold lacquer finish. A front F key, high F# and a low A give you the broad coverage a baritone needs. Drawn tone holes round out the professional feature set. The new key layout offers improved ergonomics and more comfortable playing. Its shorter bell design enhances playability and intonation in all registers. It especially helps center the notes in the low range. A hydro-formed neck and responsive bore design ensure quick response, solid intonation and rich tone. For concert musicians, an optional bottom peg helps support the weight of the baritone. Adjustable key guard felts offer optimum venting and intonation, and tapered pivot screws make for smooth key action.
Aspects of the YBS-62II
The YBS-62 was famous for its ease of play. You’d think on a baritone, you’d have to have a naturally long reach, but with the YBS-62II, it simply isn’t true. Based on the layout out of the original 62, the finger spread is comfortable and ergonomically sound. Many experienced saxophonists even report a more comfortable hole placement than they experience with their tenors and altos. The low A mechanism closes with absolute authority and really helps the 62II supply that big, round low end.
Extras with the YBS-62II
The YBS-62II comes with a top-quality hard case with wheels. Quality mouthpiece, brass cap and ligature included, along with care products.
