OVERVIEW

The most popular bass clarinet for schools.

The Yamaha YCL-221 Low Eb Bass Clarinet has many of the same features as professional models, but the ABS brushed resin body keeps this horn very affordable. Proven quality and durability keeps Yamaha bass clarinets a top choice among band directors.

The matte finish gives the clarinet a handsome appearance, while the ABS resin body makes the clarinet lightweight and durable. At the same time, it resonates nicely and gives it a rich, warm sound and an excellent response. Its neck angle is now the same as the professional models, resulting in a much more comfortable and natural playing position.

The leather pads (also used on its saxophones) are long lasting and provide a better feel than standard clarinet pads. The YCL-221's tone holes were scientifically designed and placed for extremely accurate intonation. The rounded key prevents key damage and eliminates the need to hold the keys when putting the instrument together. Finally, a new joint system features rubber rings surrounding the cork that help prevent air leaks, ease assembly and prevent keys from binding.

The Yamaha bass clarinet is the best for high schools. The case is small and students will take it home and practice. Very fine quality instrument. I had students make all-state band and first chair at many honor band using this horn. We have six other bass clarinets but all the students want this one. We are in the process of changing all our bass clarinets to this model. Very dependable.

Unlike the 221, the 221II is tunned to A442 (most American ensembles tune to A440). On average it plays between 15 and 25 cents sharp. This instrument is fine for young players and middle school bands, but if you don't naturally play extremely flat, it is almost impossible to play in tune. It's unfortunate that this information is not included in the product description. I wouldn't have purchased this instrument had I known this beforehand.

Trouble with YCL-221-2

Comments about Yamaha YCL-221 Student Bass Clarinet with Low Eb:

I bought this 2-piece bass clarinet for my daughter, who is entering high school. She played a one-piece Selmer in middle school, which was school-owned. This model was recommended to me by my son's university marching band director as the model he buys for his band.

Comments about Yamaha YCL-221 Student Bass Clarinet with Low Eb:

I tried several much higher priced bass clarinets from local music store but none had the ease of playing - both from the angle and fingering position and air through the instrument. Lovely sound which only gets better as I play it more. I am a music teacher and bought this for myself to play in a clarinet quartet. Lovely instrument. Great price.

Comments about Yamaha YCL-221 Student Bass Clarinet with Low Eb:

Sturdy enough for a sixth grade student musician while producing great sound. Band director was impressed with the build quality and sound produced by this instrument. I anticipate lasting well into college if my child pursues music that long. Very competitively priced compared to other models in the same class.

This instrument was on a 4 month back order direct from Yamaha and could not be found at any local music stores. WWBW was able to deliver on Monday when ordered on a Friday, and was delivered in perfect condition.

      Amazing Bass

Comments about Yamaha YCL-221 Student Bass Clarinet with Low Eb:

I've owned one for 6 years now, and I've made many all-district bands with it. I love the horn. I think it produces good tone and is comfortable to play in all registers. I've even hit a double high C on it. The only problem with this horn is (at least with mine) it is made incredibly sharp, to the point where it is almost a half step. It could just be my specific horn, but mine is incredibly sharp and it always has been. Other than that I love my horn, and it is the main reason I love Yamaha and plan on buying mostly Yamaha instruments.

      Solid Quality

Comments about Yamaha YCL-221 Student Bass Clarinet with Low Eb:

Yamaha is usually great right out of the box and this bass clarinet is certainly up to that standard. I bought the instrument for my school and it sounds tremendous in the ensembles. The "rubber ball" stand is very secure and the case is nice and small so that it travels well (worked as a carry-on on our recent tour to Hong Kong). The instrument is solid and the price is right - get this horn!

      Looks great, plays great.

Comments about Yamaha YCL-221 Student Bass Clarinet with Low Eb:

I just received my YCL 221II today and it took my breath away when I opened the case. It fits snug in the compartments and is surprisingly lightweight to carry. It assembled easily as I took care not to jam the long keys. Use cork grease! The smooth and silent keywork was my first observation followed by easy blowing and good intonation. I had to pull the neck out a little more than usual but otherwise the scale was good. The register key was sticking closed at first but a touch of powder paper fixed that. The construction is solid and the case is great. I am going to have fun with this one.

Great beginner instrument but plays out of tune

      By

Comments about Yamaha YCL-221 Student Bass Clarinet with Low Eb:

The instrument is well made and, for the most part, plays in tune with itself. However, after about 10 minutes of playing the instrument plays much too sharp and is difficult to play with an orchestra. The 2nd chair bass clarinetist that I play with also has the YCL 221 and she has the same problem.

      well built, as expected

Comments about Yamaha YCL-221 Student Bass Clarinet with Low Eb:

I picked up this instrument for jazz playing. It's perfect for my needs. I don't mind the 442 tuning, since [a] some orchestras play high (yeah, they tune to 440, but don't stay there) and [b] playing louder for jazz means "blowing flat" to some degree. I am very happy with it.
