OVERVIEW

Great tone and consistency, and an excellent choice for tenor players who want to double on soprano.

The YSS-475II delivers professional qualities at an intermediate price. Much of its design is based upon the Custom EX saxes, and it shares many of the same features. The 475II offers outstanding response, tone, and intonation, as well as comfortable playability.

The YSS-475II features a Bb custom spatula facilitates correct technique and increases player comfort. It also has an adjustable thumb rest that allows for a comfortable hand and fingering position. Its high F# key allows for more alternate fingerings and a true high F#, and its new body shape provides improved intonation and optimal airflow. The YSS-475II is additionally equipped with a lower vent tubing design that reduces noise on lower vent key action. A new key post rib plate provides improved protection, greater durability and increased strength. The new keys are lighter, with more comfortable positioning. New bullet point headless pivot screws make for easy adjustment, and laser engraving adds precision styling and an improved look.

solidy made, stable, reliable - pick it up, it works

Comments about Yamaha YSS-475II Intermediate Soprano Saxophone:

I bought this horn after returning one from a "lesser manufacturer" (had thought I'd save some $$). It does a great job of meeting my needs for playing jazz in combo & big band settings. The reason I buy an instrument isn't for "flash," "edge on the sound," or things like that. I want consistent response, tone & intonation through the full range of the horn - and a sound I can color within my control. An instrument forgiving of reed variations is also helpful - saves time looking for "1 out of 100" when you can get "1 out of 5" to play fine. This instrument provides exactly what I was seeking. Referring to other reviews commenting about difficulty of control/burbling tones. In my personal opinion, that's potentially more mouthpiece/reed related. I opted to pick up a Meyer 6 G series mouthpiece (matching my alto & tenor setup). The soprano can play full range, in tune, with both an expansive loud sound (tending towards a dark quality) and extremely soft dynamic capabilities. What might improve this instrument? Maybe a tiny bit more "brightness and projection" (but that's why there are pro instruments out there). A better "stock mouthpiece" included with the horn at purchase. The one provided is pretty closed, dark, and makes it hard to experience the instrument's true potential. So I'm very happy with the horn. It does what it should so I can do what I need to. What more can you want from a horn?

Outstanding Horn

Comments about Yamaha YSS-475II Intermediate Soprano Saxophone:

This horn I think, is without a doubt AMAZING. I have tried other sopranos most being custom made or professional, and this one was best. I think it really works FOR the player not against the player, and I can do pretty much anything on it and it sounds great. I use the 4C mouthpiece it came with and size 3 reg. Vandorens and it is the best sound I've gotten out of a horn. My experience is getting scores of compliments and getting paid by using it. Perfect for anyone serious about music.

Bright and responsive, and easy to control

Comments about Yamaha YSS-475II Intermediate Soprano Saxophone:

It's getting close to christmas now, so it's been almost a year that I've had this saxophone. It has not ceased to amaze me! The key layout is very easy on the hands. The sound is bright, but the more you play it, the easier it becomes to make it bright, or dark and rich. It depends on the sound that you want, but this sax can handle it with ease. I have found the entire range of notes and their tones to be very easy to control. I have had absolutely no trouble whatsoever on the upkeep of this horn. It's a solid and reliable horn through and through.

Best soprano sax in this price range

Comments about Yamaha YSS-475II Intermediate Soprano Saxophone:

I tested 2 other soprano saxes compared to this one and the intonation, feel and tone was by far better than a pro line model costing about half as much. Comparing this to the "musicianÆs standard" in saxes, in this price range, the Yamaha was easier to play and had a richer sound. I tried several mouthpieces with each horn to be as objective as possible. I ended up with a Vandoren hard rubber piece which gave the Yamaha a rich tone and great intonation even going from a low D to high D or F. I bought this as my double sax. Really didn't want to spend a fortune and am very satisfied with this horn.

Plays like a Yamaha, and certainly an Intermediate

Comments about Yamaha YSS-475II Intermediate Soprano Saxophone:

I got this horn about a year ago out of desperate need for a soprano, and not having enough cash for a pricier horn. I've used it with some success as a double, but it has some frustrating characteristics. I play a Mark VI tenor, and I wasn't expecting this horn to live up to that of course, but for me even with considerable shedding on the horn it falls short of being useable professionally. The resonance is pretty dead; it takes a pretty open mouthpiece / hard reed combination to get any real sound out of the thing. Keep in mind that I like a focused but full sound, and folks using baffled and/or smaller tipped mouthpieces might have better results. Also there intonation is good for an intermediate, but tough to tame. I found it more "in tune" than a vintage Selmer sop, but harder to manipulate, and therefore pretty hard to play in tune...close but just bad enough to be uncomfortable. I also have some issues with gurgling (unstable) notes that may or may not be able to me resolved in a repair shop. In general, it seems like I have to put way to much energy into the horn for what I get back. This horn would probably be good for students and doublers wanting a more "classical" sound from a soprano (it has a pretty even response for an intermediate horn), but if you are looking for something to be a substitute for a Pro horn, IÆd say don't bother its not even close.
