The Yamaha YSS-82Z, or Custom Z, is a straight soprano saxophone that was introduced in 2011 to replace the Yamaha YSS-82. The update improved its sound and mechanics, as well as its already excellent reputation in the saxophone world. It is constructed of a lighter weight brass alloy for a great feel and broad tonal flexibility. The Custom Z plays evenly in all ranges and with a vast dynamic range. The YSS-82Z is based on the classic 62 tenor and alto models with a virtually identical key layout. Anyone who is comfortable with other professional Yamaha saxophones will transition comfortably to the mechanics of the YSS-82Z.
Like 62-series instruments, Custom Z sopranos have one-piece bodies made of a special brass alloy for a great playing feel and lighter weight. This is especially important with straight soprano. The YSS-82Z offers tonal flexibility and even response in all ranges. From a whisper to scream, “The Z” delivers the way a professional-grade soprano should. Features of the YSS-82Z
The YSS-82Z is appreciated for its sound, but it is also appreciated for its light weight. Many soprano saxophonists prefer not to use a strap, but many models are a challenge to support for long periods of time without one. Its one-piece construction eliminates a lot of extra weight by not having a neck receiver, which alongside its special brass alloy and ideal balance results in an instrument that performs beautifully and is comfortable to play.
The Z’s high F# key allows for more alternate fingerings as well a true high F# that instantly drops into perfect tune. Between its adjustable thumb-rest and ergonomic key design, any player can find precise and comfortable fingering and a relaxed and ergonomic hand position.
The hand-engraving on the hand-hammered bell is accented further by mother of pearl key buttons. The beauty and style of the YSS-82Z combines with its mechanical excellence to make it one of the world’s most preferred professional saxophones.
