Comments about Yamaha YSS-875EX Custom EX Soprano Saxophone:

I originally reviewed this horn in 2009 - when I first got it from WWBW. I was a young player just getting started and I had little clue of what I was doing on saxophone, especially on soprano. 9 years later, it is a different story. This horn allows me to make something new and unique everyday; something everyone enjoys listening to, myself included.

My 875 has taken me many places; through a full marching band performance, more than 30-40 quartet performances, many solo pieces, and countless features in several jazz ensembles. The intonation is so easy to control and the tuning is spot on - throughout the full range, low Bb to F# at the top. I can pop out overtones with ease, regardless of my setup or which neck I decide use and my sound is what I make it - full, dark, bright, or seductive. The ergonomics are carefully made to compliment a well seasoned sax player. You won't be disappointed - as should be with this price tag. The case is also durable and appropriately spacious.

Lastly, I thoroughly want to play this horn all the time - it is THAT enjoyable. I know many players shy away from soprano because when the horn and setup do not compliment each other, it is frustrating. Honestly, any of the Yamaha's are a great choice for soprano, especially the 875EX. You can't go wrong.

But for the setup, find your soprano setup by using a tuner on concert C and playing just the mouthpiece, ligature and reed. When you get it right, the horn will sing. As I've learned over the years on all saxophones, it's one of the best ways to find what works for you. It might take some time, but when the right setup gets to the horn, it all just...opens up. Add some intonation exercises (Kynaston book), some overtones, a little transcription and you've got yourself a pro sound.

For starters, my classical setup is a Selmer C* with a Rovner dark and Vandoren Blue at a 3.5; my jazz setup is a Vandoren V16 S8 with the Optimum leg (two point pressure plate) and Green Java's at a 3.

I Love This Saxophone

Comments about Yamaha YSS-875EX Custom EX Soprano Saxophone:

This is my second soprano sax, replacing a Yanagisawa 991 curved soprano. The Yamaha is easier to play and sounds better too. This is just an incredibly wonderful instrument. I saved money by buying a "gently used" one from WWBW, but it looks brand new to me, in perfect condition, and came with all expected accessories. I'm using a Vandoren mouthpiece and Rovner Versa ligature.

Comments about Yamaha YSS-875EX Custom EX Soprano Saxophone:

Best soprano I've played. Clear tone and intonation throughout the range of the instrument. Great, clear altissimo. High-g model is nice but not a necessity.

Better than the YSS-675

Comments about Yamaha YSS-875EX Custom EX Soprano Saxophone:

This sax is amazing. I want to advise...if you're thinking about saving bucks and getting the YSS-675, think again! I tried both horns and unlike the other reviewer, found a huge difference in response and tone. This horn combines effortless response with a stunning tone. Also, don't base your judgment on the mouthpiece it comes with. You need to put a pro mouthpiece on it to really see what it is capable of. I found the bundled mouthpiece makes it sound winy. Build quality is good. A perfect soprano sax.

Comments about Yamaha YSS-875EX Custom EX Soprano Saxophone:

This is a magical, amazing instrument. It is always in tune. I'm an amateur, but I can make it sound like a flute, clarinet or trumpet. It can sound like Kenny G one minute and raw the next. Playing this can be a spiritual experience. I tried out this horn with a Yanigasawa custom model. The Yani was easier to play and had a nicer case and was cheaper, but this had (and still does) the wonderful tone. I usually play it with a metal Otto Link 6 and the lig that came with that mouthpiece, but my Jodyjazz rubber 6 is also great with it.

You wonÆt be disappointed

Comments about Yamaha YSS-875EX Custom EX Soprano Saxophone:

This soprano is AMAZING. This is my first soprano, and the moment I played it, out of the box, it was beautiful!!! It came with a reed and everything. Surprisingly, the finger layout, as well as the feel of the horn is strangely like my Yamaha tenor; YTS-52. The intonation is way beyond anything IÆve ever heard before. ItÆs sweet, yet somewhat focused (with the original mouthpiece; I use a Rousseau 4R for classical, and it sounds a lot different). The only thing that I've noticed is that the tuning on mid and high C# is flat, but IÆm pretty sure itÆs me. Also, all notes (including high D, D#, E, E#, F, F#) are extremely flawless. F# can be a bit troublesome at times, but itÆs right on most of the time. I'm not sure what it is, but there is something about a Yamaha that separates it from the other brands. If youÆre in need of a great, yet inexpensive horn, then go for Yamaha. I would say that they are freakishly consistent horns (from a YTS-52 [475] to a YSS-875). If you have any questions, email, would be best.

Comments about Yamaha YSS-875EX Custom EX Soprano Saxophone:

I bought one of these a few months back and have been very pleased with it. Great classical horn. I put this up against the top competitor (the Selmer series III) and they were really close. More of trade-offs than on being better than the other. I found the Yamaha to be less honky and the tone was more consistent in all the registers. But the series III had better intonation and the high range was a little easier to get out. Its all in what you are looking for, but this is one of the best sopranos on the market today.

Comments about Yamaha YSS-875EX Custom EX Soprano Saxophone:

I went to buy a new soprano and tried Selmer 52, 51, not impressed, tried a Yani played very nice. When I tried the YSS875EZ it was hands down I was buying this horn. The horn was not even set-up yet and it played with so much ease, pure vibrant sounding horn.

Comments about Yamaha YSS-875EX Custom EX Soprano Saxophone:

This horn is LIGHTS OUT! It has such a great, dynamic, multipurpose sound that you can use it in everything from classical ballads all the way to the most rippinÆ run you've ever played in a HOT Latin piece. It dares you to even try to play out of tune. The clear lacquer has such a warm, rich sound however it can play bright when you need it to. The keys are perfectly situated for easy runs and they are light as feathers. I tried out 6 different sops before I bought this one, i.e. Selmer S80, Yanagisawa S990, Yanagisawa S991, Yamaha YSS-475, Yamaha YSS-675, and Yamaha YSS-82Z. The Yamaha YSS-875EX played the best........right out of the box. One conflict I ran into when buying was that the Yamaha YSS-675 played extremely similar....HOWEVER with the YSS-675 being a mere 300 dollars less, it just made sense to go with the YSS-875EX to get the newest innovation of Yamaha. Innovation of the Custom series meets (the) hands of innovative musicians.

Truly Beautiful Sound!

Comments about Yamaha YSS-875EX Custom EX Soprano Saxophone:

I just started playing the Soprano Saxophone in July 2007 and started with a beginner brand. Finding that I was in love with the sound of the Soprano Saxophone, I upgraded to the Custom 875EX Yamaha in October 2007 and even my teacher, who is a real professional, is astounded at the sound of this horn. It is easy to play and has a wonderful appearance, in addition to the super quality construction. It ships in a leather case that is equally as nice and easy to handle as the instrument. The Yamaha Custom 875EX is the finest quality instrument I have ever purchased. I am now playing Kenny G numbers on it and getting that same fabulous sound. I recently compared it to a Selmer Series III and it sounds much better than that horn. With its own mouthpiece and a Vandoren Optimum Ligature and Rico Hemke reeds, this horn is warm, controllable, and everything a saxophone should sound like.
