What a great sound! This is the type of instrument for classical OR jazz. It blends well with any type of ensemble. I haven't played my Xeno or Bach since purchasing this instrument. This will be the last Bb trumpet you will ever buy.

Yamaha YTR-9335CHS Chicago Bb Trumpet

I was surprised to see very few reviews on this trumpet while making a purchase decision. With the exception of a D/Eb Schilke, All of my trumpets are Yamaha, and I was upgrading from a standard XENO YTR-8335S ML Bb. Both are listed as .459 bore, but the Chicago is much more open, and has very little back pressure. The horn is much more stable at higher volumes, and it is much easier to produce a louder sound, without feeling limited. The intonation is MUCH better throughout the range of the horn. More air is needed to play this horn, but with proper abdominal support, there is no constriction in any register, including the upper range. I did have WWBW send me three Chicago trumpets on trial, and there was significant variation among the three (IMHO). The one I chose was NIB (New In Box) and was much more open than the other two. As for myself, I play lead in a small city (no screaming parts) and play about 3-4 times per week. I use a Bach 3C mouthpiece, with a Stork LDS4 for jazz work. I do not have to play every day to keep up chops for this horn (But I want to!). In short, I couldn't be happier with this trumpet! If I find a future need to play C trumpet on a regular basis, I will definitely look at purchasing one of the Chicago C trumpets. The horn is expensive, but well worth the cost!

Most versatile trumpet I have played.

I grew up playing on Bach trumpets, but there was just always something about the response of my Bach that I was never ok with. I have tried a large variety of trumpets at both the International Trumpet Guild Conference, and the National Trumpet Competition, and after trying out a prototype of the Chicago B flat at the ITG conference, I couldn't wait to get my hands on one. This trumpet provides a traditional and characteristic trumpet sound, while still playing very much in tune. I have found this trumpet to be at home in jazz, wind ensemble, orchestral, solo and small group settings. It is a very free blowing trumpet and does take a significant amount of control to play in a small group setting due to the large sound that it produces. I have been playing mine for about nine months now and couldn't be happier.
