The Yamaha YTS-82ZII, commonly known as the Custom Z, underwent a neck-to-bell redesign in 2013 after the original Custom Z’s ten-year run. The Custom Z now offers the ultimate combination of expressiveness, response and control, while still staying true to its origins.
The concept for the YTS-82Z was to create an instrument with the tonal profile of the saxophones of the ‘50s and ‘60s, but with the mechanical precision of a modern horn. The YTS-82ZII expands on both parts of this idea, with improvements in its tonal scope as well as its mechanical ease.
Design and construction elements
The YTS-82ZII is an update of the YTS-82Z, an instrument that became a favorite of working musicians everywhere. The YTS-82ZII is constructed of imported French brass, a lighter alloy than the annealed yellow brass used in the YTS-62III. Like the 62III, it features fully ribbed construction.
The Custom Z is the only Yamaha model that uses domed metal resonators. This helps deliver superb response along with bright, clear tone and a broad dynamic range. The entire range of the instrument has a clear pronunciation with effortless playability across the range of the instrument. Like many of the best vintage saxophones, the 82ZII comes with a one-piece bell, which improves low end response and offers a wide palette of tonal colors. It has a hand-hammered body, bell and neck, and its new engraving design is likewise done by hand. These saxophones are the handcrafted product of a team of true artisans.
The Custom Z yellow brass key buttons with mother of pearl key touches, which adds to the instrument’s striking appearance and satisfying action. The wide bore taper of the V1 neck provides a free-blowing feel and the greatest possible flexibility. This combination of features allows the player the ultimate level of tonal expression.
The Yamaha YTS-82ZII features a two-point bell brace for better efficiency. Many players are pleasantly surprised at how accessible challenging passages suddenly become with the Custom Z. Its lack of resistance, especially in the top end, is extraordinary.
A lighter thumb rest and thumb hook base design produce better response and steady control, and blue steel springs offer a fast, sensitive key response. It has an adjustable Front F key along with a high F# key and an adjustable thumb rest. The adjustable Front F gives the player the freedom to find the optimal level of resistance in the altissimo range.
