One of the better intermediate horns.
Quality and features meet low price in the Yanagisawa A-991 Series Professional Alto Saxophone. The Yanagisawa A-991 alto sax is the product of the finest Japanese instrument craftsmanship in a fully professional-quality step-up saxophone.
The Yanagisawa A-991 saxophone's superb resonance and a refined sound are winning converts from many other manufacturers' horns. Intonation is even over the saxophone's entire range and at all dynamic levels. With a wide palette of tonal colors, the Yanagisawa A-991 sax blends well with other wind instruments.
The Yanagisawa A-991 sax sounds beautiful in all registers and has a big voice. If you're stepping up from a student saxophone, you'll find the A-991 alto sax to be refined and focused with even intonation over its entire range and at all dynamic levels. With a range from low Bb to high F#, both upper and lower register notes come forth easily even at quiet dynamics.
For fast runs and other techniques that require quick response, Yanagisawa has set the keys closer to the holes than some other professional saxophones. Yanagisawa includes a sway-free mechanism for the auxiliary F and low C# keys”an additional professional touch. You'll also be pleased with how well the octave keys fit your palm.
Yanagisawa saxophone build quality is second to none from the A-991 saxophone's lacquered brass to its hand-engraved bell. Each Yanagisawa A-991 alto sax includes a mouthpiece, a case, and a set of care products.

The 991 alto sax is the horn that has it all. The sound is similar to the bright edgy sound I have gotten while playing many selmer mark vi's but I feel the sound I can achieve on the 991 alto is more refined and focused. The 991's build quality is second to none as well as well as the parts that go into making this horn are so unique. I would strongly recommend this horn to any saxophonist because for the low price for this instrument, you can spend the extra dollars you would be spending on a mark vi and put it towards a vintage meyer or state of the art case such as a bam
Great sounding instrument that plays well in both the upper and lower registers. I noticed that compared to a yamaha the keys are set closer to the the holes, so the action is much quicker. This is very helpful for fast runs and other techniques requiring speedy fingers. The octave keys fit the palm nicely and the black lacquer adds a nice touch. I don't think I'll ever need to play on another type of saxophone.
I have been playing on this horn for almost 6 months and i absolutly love it. Hands down the best horn I have ever played. This horn sounds beautiful in all registers. I used to play on a King student model and I've played on a couple Yamahas and Selmers but i will never go back. My Yani is my favorite horn of all time. Great horn if you want to sound great and have a big sound.
My goodness. Before I played it, I knew it was going to be an amazing horn. I played it to confirm my thoughts. I was right. The Yanagisawa A-991 is one of the best altos I've ever played on. It's a big step up from my student model Vito I've been using for a couple years...... The altissimo notes come out with ease, and the low notes also come out with ease, and they can be played at quiet dynamics. I recommend this horn to anybody looking for a good horn.
