William Campbell HS 2010 UMRM Winner
In Tune Visits Naruna, VA School And Delivers $40,000 of Musical Equipment in 6th Annual In Tune Monthly "Ultimate Music Room Makeover Contest"
Naruna, VA—National music education magazine and website In Tune Monthly presented $40,000 in musical gear from eleven of its sponsors to Doug Brown, music teacher at William Campbell Combined School in Naruna, Virginia last week. Mr. Brown's essay bested hundreds from around the country in In Tune's 6th annual "Ultimate Music Room Makeover" contest.
In Tune executives awarded the gear in a presentation at the school on October 13, 2010. Held in cooperation with MENC: The National Association for Music Education, the contest asks teachers why their schools are deserving of the prize. MENC Executive Director Michael Butera attended the presentation as guest speaker.
Doug Brown's winning essay highlighted his success in building a music program in need of revitalization in this small, rural town near Brookneal, VA. "Over the last twenty years, Brookneal has fallen victim to outsourcing of jobs overseas. Almost all of the factories have closed down, which has left the town struggling to find a new centralized economy and identity," he said. He also included a creative collection of interviews with his students on their musical hopes and dreams. The high school's work with the Patrick Henry Boys Home also figured in their choice as winner of the 2010 contest.
Eleven leading music industry manufacturers contributed recording and performance gear, musical instruments and software for the prize: Buffet Crampon, Notion, Pearl, Peavey, Pro-Mark, PRS, Roland, Shure, Woodwind & Brasswind, Yamaha, and Zildjian. "This was a tough year to continue the Makeover," said In Tune Partners CEO, Irwin Kornfeld. "With so many companies challenged by the economy we were concerned. But, In Tune's advertisers stepped up anyway, and we're proud to be able to join them in continuing their support for music in our schools."
"The William Campbell band is a great band and I should know because I'm in it. Everybody in band is just so amazing. A lot of us will get better by working hard. I'm just so happy that we got these new equipments. It's awesome, it is what Mr. Brown said, it is just like Christmas. I hope people believe we can become better. We are not as big as some schools, but we are still great. I thank the people that help us win the new equipment and the people that gave us the equipment and I also would like to thank Mr.Brown for being a great Band Director." - posted by Christian Bailey to the WSET website, the ABC affiliate TV station covering Lynchburg, Danville & Roanoake, VA.
