An acoustic violin is lighter and easier to play than an electric violin. Crafted out of wood, their delicate feel and relative light weight means they are recommended for beginners who are just starting out on the instrument. Timeless and always popular, the acoustic violin has remained unchanged for over 500 years.
When purchasing an acoustic violin for a student, it is worth noting that they come in a variety of different sizes, expressed as fractions such as fractions 1/16, 1/10, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and full size.
Acoustic violin strings are made from a variety of materials, including plain gut, gut wound with metal, synthetic core strings, steel wound with steel, etc. and come in in three gauges: thick, medium and thin. The type of string you will use depends very much on personal taste and the acoustical qualities of the instrument and it is recommended that you try different types in order to find the best fit for you.
