Great reeds, but warp quickly

Comments about Alexander Reeds Superial Alto Saxophone Reeds:

I bought these on a recommendation I had gotten a few years back from a friend and do not regret finally buying them. However, I would wear through each reed in about 2.5 weeks (perhaps about 30 hours a week of playing)--they would warp beyond playability. I bought 3s as that is what was equivalent to the Vandoren 3.5s that I would shape down to a 3. My guess is that a 3.5 would be less inclined to warp, as it would be stiffer. Other than that, absolutely brilliant sound quality, each one worked straight out of the box--no filing/cutting needed. I would highly recommend these reeds, and purchase them again.

I have been using this reed for about two years and find it consistently reliable. Only occassionaly do I find a reed that simply is defective out of the box. Lovely tone quality.

Comments about Alexander Reeds Superial Alto Saxophone Reeds:

I haven't played on reeds this good in years. Since high school really. For years I was a Lavoz hard Fan. Then for even longer I became a Hemke 4 man. After enough years of playing on as Meyer 7 with a Hemke 4 they felt too soft. So I got a bigger mouthpiece, a Selmer Soloist F. Then I tried all the major reed brands on it to no avail. Lavoz, Hempkee, Rico Royal, Vandoren V16, Vandoren ZZ, Rico Plasticover, Rico Jazz Select Filed and Unfiled, I didn't like any of them so I tried several different mouthpieces with all the same reed brands. I still didn't like it. Tone is a very personal thing and I'm a perfectionist. I'm obsessive about tone. I wanted a sound that expressed my personal feelings and quirks. I was looking through the wwbw catalog and noticed that Joshua Redman was endorsing these reeds. I usually don't take endorsements that seriously but I checked out their website to find out more anyway. Tons of pros are switching to these reeds. Check it out. So I bought some from wwbw. I finally found the tone I was looking for as soon as I put one on my Selmer Soloist mouthpiece. Their resonant. That's the best way to describe it. They vibrate a lot. And you can really hear the overtones above the primary tone when you're playing. Their bright and dark at the same time you get the full range. But not too bright, with the Selmer Soloist mouthpiece that is. I haven't tried them on any other mouthpieces. Follow the suggestions on their website when they tell you how to prepare a reed, break it in slowly for use and longevity it really works. I'm using a 3 1/2 now and I even got one reed to last a whole month. With any of the others I couldn't get them to last even a week before they broke down until they felt like soft paper. I should tell you I play hard, and aggressive. I like resistance so I can really push the air that's why I like harder reeds. I'm louder that way. Use softer strengths if you don't like them that way. I studied jazz at Berklee and I've done some cruise ship gigs. Nevertheless I'm curently in a rock band. It doesn't matter though. I can play soft on these reeds too. Their excellent! The best reeds on the market.

long search for the Holy Grail in alto sax reeds has ended!

Comments about Alexander Reeds Superial Alto Saxophone Reeds:

The good thing about these reeds is you can order a box of five to try them out, and if you don't like them, you're not stuck with a box of 10. When I tried the first one, it seemed like the cherished Rico I had lost years ago when a repairman emptied out my sax case, including all my reeds. With a vintage Brillhart mouthpiece, the sound on my Yamaha 82Z is rich in the low register--as well as easy to hit--and easy to reach in the upper register. I like a 2.5, because as a flute player I don't have the muscle jaws that a full-time sax player would have. I would rate these over the Vardoren's I tried, ZZ, Select. My Ricos don't even come close. These reeds bring out the best in my 82Z! They give you the flexibility to hold back, for classical in the low notes, to playing out in jazz.

Ready to play out of the box.

Comments about Alexander Reeds Superial Alto Saxophone Reeds:

I play both clarinet and alto sax in a big band setting. To date I have found these reeds to be consistantly useable right from the box, you can keep new spares beside you in a gig, and change and keep right on playing. I currently use Pete Fountain reeds (3's), for the clarinet, great out of the box, but die quicker the Alexanders.

Instance response and extreme volume control!!!

Comments about Alexander Reeds Superial Alto Saxophone Reeds:

I love them. I have played with the Superial and D.C.'s but don't find there to be too much difference. The response is so immediate and the volume is only topped off by the size of the reed. I prefer the lower sizes for instant ease and advanced tone control. I found these when they were new to the area and handed out for free as samples, and haven't switched since. Some people didn't like it but I do. I hate the muted hold the standard Vandoren's have. When I first found them at the end of high school, I could blow the entire sax section away during the pep band where I put it to the test.
