Just like a flute should be. Not a bright sounding instrument at all (or maybe that's my core sound?). I play mainly sax and needed a decent flute. The head is nice and responsive as well... maybe due to the thin wall sterling. I can't see changing more than the headjoint at some point. Recommended.
I recently purchased this model and must say it is a very good flute for the money. It is well made, affordably priced, & will last a very long time if taken care of. My flute professor played it, and thought it was quite good for the money! To me, it is "open" blowing, and is not too resistant. It would be a great instrument for a serious high school or college player & a professional woodwind player who doubles. I would purchase another one all over again. It's a good one!
I recently purchased one of these from WWBW and am very pleased. It is well made and is a fully American-made instrument. It is 'open' blowing, but is also dark & responsive. I highly recommend this flute due to its quality, price point, & that it is domestically produced, which is great if you need parts, or have questions. Finally, for a high school or college student, this is a great buy. While the competing Gemeinhardt, is a good instrument and is good choice, to me the Armstrong cost a little more, but played better. I would certainly purchase another one without blinking. For my uses, this fit the bill!
When I first got this flute, I immediately noticed how much more comfortable the keys were and how the notes came out easier. People have also told me how the sound is more dark and open. It projects well, and is pretty durable in terms of a couple light knocks against another flute or metal cleaning rod. One problem, however, is the high E and F# are a little trickier on this flute; the high E is more temperamental in terms of amount of air needed to cleanly play it, and the F# doesn't really want to come out on the first attack. I'm a student, though, so that might also just be me. I overall like this flute, as well as the Armstrong line. Would recommend this to others.
