Silver Version - cuts through

Comments about BG Metal Tradition Clarinet Ligatures:

I currently own the silver version of this ligature. Very well made. I also own a Vandoren Optimum and an inverted Bonade ligature (Gold). This definitely cuts through more than the other ligatures I have. Personally, I'm finding it a bit on the bright side using my current setup (Buffet R13 with M30 Lyre). If you're having issues trying to cut through in the band/orchestra, this should help.

Fantastic.

Comments about BG Metal Tradition Clarinet Ligatures:

The beginning of college, I decided I needed to learn clarinet seriously (originally a bass clarinet player). My lessons teacher told me to get an inverted metal ligature. I chose the BG tradition (silver). This ligature is what I started learning on, so at first I couldn't really feel the significance and difference of it. Recently, however, I put on just another metal inverted ligature (stock) and tried that out. I noticed my articulation wasn't very clear and notes had a rougher time speaking with clarity. I thought I was just having a bad day. I popped on the Tradition, and it literally fixed everything back to normal (normal - meaning ability to articulate with ease and easy voicing). This ligature made a huge difference.

Robust Sound and Intimate Tones

Comments about BG Metal Tradition Clarinet Ligatures:

I am in one of those experimental modes many clarinet players endure from time to time. I've been experimenting with mouthpieces, reeds and ligatures recently just for the pure heck of it. I own an essentially "brand new" 1958 Centered Tone Selmer clarinet played only 6 months in 1958 and then put in protected storage by a family member until 2008. I play a Buffet in my real life as a musician. However, the CT Selmer has been of interest to me since I took ownership. I preface my review with above info for good reason: I think I might have found the perfect combo for the CT: a Selmer C85 120 mouthpiece, a BG ligature and a Vandoren Rue 56 reed. The BG ligature was the magical missing element. The big bore CT now plays as wide as Kansas sky and as sweet as a Georgia peach. A previous review covers technical aspect of the ligature nicely. Artistically, I consider this ligature a piece of equipment which allows me to forget equipment and lets me play freely. Amazing what a bit of metal can do to open possibilities.

Theory meets the reality

Comments about BG Metal Tradition Clarinet Ligatures:

What a brilliantly designed and elegantly styled ligature! I have used Bonade and Rovner Dark ligatures but I cannot hide my joy of using this silver-plated BG tradition ligature. It is worth the price tag. A couple of good features that I think worth mentioning: 1) Single screw is so positioned rather on the lower side on the top of the mouthpiece that it seems to allow slightly more tightening on the lower portion of the reed thereby playing with open and brighter sound. 2) Not like other single screw ligatures, this one covers more length of the reed and it seems to keep better portion of the reed moisturized and possibly help preventing reed warping. 3) Because the pressure points to the bark area are narrow and the cork-like material is present in the center groove between the two pressure ridges, tightening of the screw does not leave noticeable indentation marks to the bark of the reed like Bonade ligature with wider rails and yet it rather allows more freedom for the reed to vibrate. 4) The design of the side ring portion of the ligature on both sides are reversed in such a way that it seems to generate different tension and balance off the uneven lip pressure given to the reed due to the fact that we generally have tendency to hold the clarinet to the right side of our body. 5) Playing the twelfth or the staccato notes are easy with this ligature. Overall, this ligature seems to fit the descriptions as advertised --- it plays with a full, flexible and brilliant sound that explores the entire sound spectrum.
