Bach LR180S-43 Stradivarius Professional Bb TrumpetThis is the Bach LR180S-43 Stradivarius Bb trumpet. It features a .459" medium-large bore, lightweight body, standard weight yellow brass one-piece hand-hammered #43 bell, reverse construction #25LR lead pipe, monel pistons, and a silver-plate finish. Comes with Bach 7C mouthpiece and a zippered Cordura covered wood shell case. The term reversed lead pipe refers to the lead pipe inserting into the tuning slide rather than the other way around. This makes for less resistance and as a result, a more free-blowing horn. It is impeccably constructed and has a clear, present and brilliant sound. It is a favorite of classical and jazz players alike, and should be on the list of horns to consider when selecting the instrument of your dreams.

I've played many, many horns and found this to be the best for a variety of reasons. As stated by other reviewers, the LR makes the horn a little more free-blowing - nice for projection into a large room or freedom to blow a little without being overbearing in more intimate settings. The 72 bell I have a couple unique experiences with - I've had both a beginning and intermediate student try out all three bell sizes (37, 43, 72) side by side in a music store, and also have let many students of mine try out my LR-72 after playing their own horn for a while. (all this of course with their own mouthpiece). EVERY person notes a difference with the 72 bell. After playing my trumpet, three of my students relatively quickly thereafter bought their own with the same exact specifications. A fourth is in process right now! Please note that it is best if you can try out the actual horn you're going to buy as each one is slightly different and when you're spending this much you want to get it exactly right. Not to say the price is bad - it's actually quite good! The only thing better than this is the Monette stuff but then you better be filthy rich and have a year to wait to get one of their horns. Their mouthpieces, though, make a huge difference - I use MFIII Prana with my Bach LR180-72 and it's an amazing combination. Buy it! Buy it! Buy it!
I got a #43 of this two years ago, and it's amazing. The difference between this and my old student horn astounds me: the response, tone quality; everything about it is just wonderful. Did not affect the extent of my range, but increases my endurance in the high register by a great amount. Recommended to anyone looking for an excellent trumpet.
The reverse lead-pipe (LR) makes for a more difficultly centered pitch. The lightweight body is made light by thinner tubes than other Bach horns. This also makes it harder to center pitches well. For a well trained player it is wonderful, but for a student from beginner through high school I would not recommend. Playing on this horn for years has caused me to develop bad habits. I am constantly fighting the pitch to keep it where I want it to be. I would recommend looking into the 37 or the 72 with standard lead-pipes. You really need to play a horn before purchasing so if you can, go to the WWBW store and try some of the horns they have. Talk to your instructors about what kind of horn to purchase before taking any action.
The LR43 is easily my favorite stock Bach Bb, though the standard 43 is close.
The 43 is definitely superior to both the 37 and 72, in my opinion. It is a little freer than the 37, and brightens up easier than the 72. Not quite as focused as the 37, but I like that.
The sound is not too bright; it's rich and resonant in a way that is easier to find than the 37. The reverse leadpipe makes the horn blow very freely, while not sapping your endurance. Between that and the 43 bell, the slots feel comfortably wide.
Also, in general, I prefer the feel of Bach valves to most other large manufacturers.
I have used my LR43 in solo, band, orchestral, and various jazz idioms, all with success. The sound can be shaped any way it needs to be, especially with the right mouthpiece.
