Comments about Buffet Crampon E12 France Intermediate Bb Clarinet:

I am going into college with a hefty scholarship to play in the band. As a result, I needed a serious upgrade from my Yamaha-YCL Advantage (Which is a great student horn, but I needed something more professional.) Throughout high school, I never upgraded my student clarinet because of financial reasons, but I was given the opportunity to pay monthly throughout 12 months by my local music store. I got to test play two intermediate clarinets, both by Buffet Crampon. I tested the E11 and E12F. I found the E12F to be so much more free-blowing compared to the E11. I also had problems finding notes naturally on the E11, unlike the E12F. The E12F had a warm tone without losing any kind of resonance. I did not even have to attempt to play loud, the clarinet did that all on its own. Which for a clarinet performing in any kind of ensemble, being able to resonant your sound loud enough so the people in the back row can hear you is an important aspect in performance. I would definitely recommend this to a serious high school student or someone who is going into college who is not music major.

Comments about Buffet Crampon E12 France Intermediate Bb Clarinet:

I recently upgraded from an older wood clarinet to this one. This clarinet is a very good clarinet with warm tone and extremely good intonation. I really enjoy playing this. Anyone who thinks this clarinet is a beginner or student clarinet is wrong. I have played an R13 and the difference between this one and the R13 is not worth the price for a semi-pro player. This clarinet is perfect for high school players.

Comments about Buffet Crampon E12 France Intermediate Bb Clarinet:

After I submitted my previous review, my daughter pointed out an error. I said the new mouthpiece improved the sound of the instrument. I should have said it improved it's playability. Sorry for my confusion.

Stiff keys and hard to play higher registers

    By

Comments about Buffet Crampon E12 France Intermediate Bb Clarinet:

When it became time to upgrade my daughter's clarinet, she tried several -- the E12 and two Yamahas (the YCL-450 and 650). My daughter almost immediately rejected the E12, however. Both she and her private teacher agreed that it took too much effort to depress the keys, making it difficult to play quickly. They also said that it was more difficult to play in the higher registers than the Yamaha 450. The E12 does have a noticeably nicer finish than the 450...but not as nice as the 650. As a side note, my daughter says that, at first, none of the instruments she tried sounded as good to her as her old plastic Olds, until she tried her mouthpiece in the new clarinets. A couple of years ago, we got her a Vandoren B45 mouthpiece, which she said made her Olds sound much better. Apparently it has the same effect on much more expensive instruments as well. I would have expected instruments in this price range to have better mouthpieces, but apparently I was wrong. Based on my daughter's experience, I would suggest anyone upgrading their clarinet to also consider upgrading their mouthpiece as well.
