I've been on Hemkes since high school, all the way through my music degree, and still play them today. They play well right out of the box, which was a big seller for me. I've known how to work on reeds for a long time, but when you're preparing for a recital, finicky reeds can be a real bummer. I rarely found myself working much on these reeds. As a result, I always recommend them to my students over Van Doren because of how easy they are to play. I have to admit, however, that Van Dorens generally last a little longer for me. In college, I would get, on average, 2.5 weeks off a 4-set of Hemke reeds with ~5 hrs playtime a day before I started to feel one or two of them weakening. A simple reed clipper can extend the lifetime of these by a week or two. That being said, 9/10 of the reeds come with a perfectly formed heart, no thicker, dark spots in the outer parts of the reed, with a silver shine around the tip of the reed when held up to a light. That's exactly what I look for. I highly recommend these easy-to-play, non-frustrating reeds.

Maybe it's me, but it's been a hit-and-miss for me. Out of a box of 5, I would only find 2 or 3 good ones. The ones that don't play well are really terrible, but the ones that are great are excellent. Very responsive, allowed me to play my ideas freely. I would definitely recommend buying more than one box just to be on the safe side of not having any bad ones.

One of the Reeds Classical Players Should Try

By

from Las Cruces, NM

Verified Buyer

Pros

  • Consistent Playability
  • Easy Articulation
  • Good Across Entire Range
  • Minimal Break In Needed

Cons

  • 3 Hemke 2 12 Vandoren
  • Tone A Bit Thin

Best Uses

  • Ensemble Concert Band

Comments about Frederick Hemke Alto Saxophone Reeds:

Overall very playable and consistent reeds with a solid low end. However I feel that I can get a richer tone from Vandoren Traditional/V12/V21 or Rico/D'Addario Classic Reserves. Results will obviously vary for others.

Pros

  • A Fairly Good Read
  • Better For Classical

Cons

  • Not Enough To The Box
  • Not Too Consistent

Best Uses

Comments about Frederick Hemke Alto Saxophone Reeds:

I ordered these as a replacement to the former rico jazz select . They aren't as consistent and they don't play as freely as the selects used to do . D'Darrio decided to abandon the custom finishes they had and have lost the quality control

These reeds give tremendous sound, flexibility, dynamics, etc. Use this with a vandoren al3 and the optimum ligature and you're on your way, kid.

mouthpiece gives great tone, but was tough in low range. This reed seems suited for strong low, yet clear easy high range too.

    Absolutely the Best Reeds Available!

Comments about Frederick Hemke Alto Saxophone Reeds:

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Hemke Saxophone Reeds are the perfect selection for any and all active players! When I was in 7th Grade, a friend of mine suggested I try Vandoren Reeds and, with no experience on other reeds, I believed him wholeheartedly and thought they were a great selection. About 8 months later, my private instructor saw these reeds and advised me to try out Fredrick Hemke 2 1/2. I immediately noticed the difference. Hemke's dark but inviting tone is perfect for classical, as well as jazz music. They are perfect for beginners, intermediate or advanced players, or people who just love saxophone! My private instructor feels exactly the same as I do. He's played on Hemke 3 1/2 for all of his adult life and loves the fact that they are consistent and are made with such high quality! I would definitely suggest purchasing these reeds.

    Perhaps my new favorite

Comments about Frederick Hemke Alto Saxophone Reeds:

I play Hemke 3.5's on my Vandoren Optimum AL3 mouthpiece. I get a very beautiful sound that is round and warm. I had been playing on Vandoren V12 3's for a couple years (and Vandoren Traditional 3's before that), then I decided to give Hemke a try. I was quite surprised. I'm extremely pleased with my tone and response. I definitely recommend these reeds. Whether or not they're better than Vandoren Traditionals or Vandoren V12s is a matter of opinion, but I'd say they're worth trying out. It should be noted that Hemkes are a little softer than Vandoren Traditionals and V12s. A Hemke 3.5 is very close to a Vandoren 3 in strength.

    Hemke alto sax reeds

    By

Comments about Frederick Hemke Alto Saxophone Reeds:

I use Hemke 2 1/2 reeds on a vintage Meliphone mp.This setup gives me a large and warm sound. I had been using Rico Royal 2 1/2 reeds but as my embouchure improved (I've been playing about two years, this time around.) They were too soft and also the quality was not consistent. I tried RR 3 but that was stiff for me and not comfortable to use. I was consulting a reed chart when I noticed that (at least on that chart) the Hemke 2 1/2 sat between the 2 1/2 and 3 of all the other brands on the chart. I tried a box and was quickly convinced. The hardness is still perfect for me after about a year of using them. I love the big dark sound I get with the reed. Perfect for the blues I play with my band but also very nice for the wind ensemble I play with. I feel the warm sound blends well with the sax section and the rest of the band. The quality has been very consistent. Almost no bad reeds out of the box. All have gotten used.

    Love These Reeds

Comments about Frederick Hemke Alto Saxophone Reeds:

I recently bought these reeds, and I now prefer them to the Vandoren V16 reeds I used to use. These reeds provide a clearer, beefier tone, and are very cheap too. I highly recommend these reeds to any jazz or concert saxophonist.

    Wonderful Fantastic Reeds

    By

    from Texas

Comments about Frederick Hemke Alto Saxophone Reeds:

These reeds are the best sounding and give you a nice dark low sound with your lower notes. They are able to be play well on right out of the box. No troubling warm up or break in technique are needed for these reeds to sound beautiful. However, I do recommend going a little bit in strengths since 3's feel like somewhere between 2.5 and 3. The best reed you find in a box of vandorens would probably be a tiny bit better then the majority of these rico reeds, but vandoren's don't might have 2 or 3 good reeds out of a box of 10 while all of these reeds here are good. GOOD BUY!
