I bought a box of these, using the same strength as my usual reeds. I took one out and broke it in with the same procedure I use on all my reeds. The next day I went to continue to break it in, and it was completely warped. Not only was the tip wavier than the ocean, but the entire base of the reed was curved like a canoe. Even the others, which did not warp that drastically that quickly, all sounded stuffy and were very uncooperative in the middle register and low register.
I've been using Rico Royals for about 30 years, and I recently tried a box of Hemkes. I like my tone slightly better with the Hemke reeds, but they don't last nearly as long as my Royals, and (based on one box) they don't seem as consistent, and the difference in tone gets lost in a large concert band.
I have been using Hemke reeds for about 15 years. I have tried many other reeds but I can't beat the consistency found with these reeds. I sometimes feel they don't last as long as I would like, but after trying every reed under the sun, I always come back to Hemke.
I have been playing these reeds for 20 years now. They are playable right out of the box every time. If you don't want to shave your reeds, give these a try. I've tried many brands over the years and always come back to Hempke. They don't seem to last as long as some reeds though.
Pros: Produce a nice dark sound Reasonably priced Fairly consistent Cons: Undependable. In some cases, the reeds would warp within the first several days
