I have been using Hemke reeds for about 15 years. I have tried many other reeds but I can't beat the consistency found with these reeds. I sometimes feel they don't last as long as I would like, but after trying every reed under the sun, I always come back to Hemke.

I bought a box of these, using the same strength as my usual reeds. I took one out and broke it in with the same procedure I use on all my reeds. The next day I went to continue to break it in, and it was completely warped. Not only was the tip wavier than the ocean, but the entire base of the reed was curved like a canoe. Even the others, which did not warp that drastically that quickly, all sounded stuffy and were very uncooperative in the middle register and low register.

Outstanding "Sonny Rollins" Reeds

Comments about Frederick Hemke Tenor Saxophone Reeds:

I read a Wikipedia piece that said Sonny Rollins prefers these reeds and tried them. I can see why! They are amazingly playable! I get good control, a great boost to that old-style "breathy" sound, and my tone seems to sound more full and colorful! Though I don't quite sound "Like Sonny," (even though I'm also using his preferred Otto Link Super-tone metal mouthpiece) I seem to be channeling Dexter Gordon from time to time! Thank you WW&BW for great reeds at a great price!!!

Hemke reeds

Comments about Frederick Hemke Tenor Saxophone Reeds:

I've been playing sax for four years. Have played blues harp and been a singer for almost 50 years, so i'm not new to music. I'm now using Hemke 3s on my alto with a V16 mp & metal ligature and find that the horn plays easily with rich but bright tone. I get tons of compliments on my sound. After trying many mp and reed combos I recently returned to a Meyer 5 mp, Rovner ligature and Hemke 3s on my tenor. Seems to be working well for me. Rich sound with warmth and a bit of punch. I find the reeds to be consistent and last well enough. Suggest try both a Rovner and a good metal ligature when you try out the reeds.

Easy blowing reed

By

Comments about Frederick Hemke Tenor Saxophone Reeds:

I have played these reeds for the past 10 years. I play a 3 1/3. What I really like about the is that they require minimal break in and the have a very light tip. They do not have the edge that is good for fusion jazz or Rock, but if you are looking for a reed that blends easily and can start from the softest piano notes this is a very good reed. One side comment they take very little to break in and they also tend to break down a little quick. But they play with a warm sound and are a very easy blowing reed.

Comments about Frederick Hemke Tenor Saxophone Reeds:

Pros: Produce a nice dark sound Reasonably priced Fairly consistent Cons: Undependable. In some cases, the reeds would warp within the first several days
