I have tried many reeds before, including Mitchell Lurie, Rico, Rico Royal, and Vandoren, but none came close to the performance and consistency of Gonzalez reeds. The reeds have a dark, rich tone, and I find that high notes, starting with two above the staff, are easier to play than some other reeds, but with better quality. The reeds are very consistent, 80% of the reeds in the box are performance quality, whereas some other brands only have 10 to 30%.
These reeds have a very warm sound and are very consistent throughout each box.
Even the reeds that are not as good are playable for practice reeds etc.
I have tried Rico, Vandoren, Mitchell-Lurie, and Vandoren V12 reeds, and went to Gonzalez just this year. The only other reeds that come close to comparing with these are the V12's. These reeds give a nice, dark sound, and I recommend these for any students and maybe any professionals.
I think someone told a fib on the quality of these reeds. Out of the box, only 1 was actually usable, and it wasn't even all that good anyways. Let me tell you whats wrong: I took all the neccesary steps to break in each of these reeds and they seemed to work for a bit, and then every reed went downhill(except for the par reed). They were especially unstable in the lower register, most notably open G, D, C and low G. Each and every note was accompanied by a faint but EXTREMELY annoying airy sound that no other reed gave me. So then I did a little research and found out that Gonzalez F.O.F 3.5s were harder than Vandoren V12 3.5s. So then it all made sense and I knew I would eventually get used to them. Well after a month they're still unstable and I knew I got used to them because they were more responsive. I play on a Vandoren 5RV Lyre, suited for 3.5, 3.5+ and 4... for Vandoren reeds. Maybe I got a bad box or the reeds were a bit too hard for my mouthpiece. Next time I'm getting 3s
I've used Gonzalez personally for several years and I have yet to get an unplayable reed. With Gonzalez, you get great, easy tone in all registers no matter what style of music you're playing. I recommend Gonzalez reeds to all of my reed players because they come in 1/4 strength increments and it makes it much easier for a student player to transition from one reed size to another. Specifically, the jump from 3 to 3.5 or 3.5 to 4 for student players can feel like you're playing on a 2x4. The 3.25 and 3.75 strengths are perfect for conditioning embouchures into accepting a harder reed. If a student plays on a 4 in concert band, then the 3.75 is a great, softer, easier strength for marching band.
