These spitballs do a good job when you want to do a quick clean on your horn. They definitely do not replace the good old fashioned "strip-down the horn cleaning," but they are great for weekly maintenance. I send it through, rinse it and send it back through several times with no valves and then with each valve depressed.
My trumpet instructor gave me some of these a few months ago when I purchased a new instrument. I did a bit of research and the liquid that the balls are encased in is actually chemically designed not just to keep your bore clean, but to help lubricate your valves and prevent future grime/dirt/particles from sticking!
These are about the best thing you can use on your trumpet for regular maintenance. Once a week seems to do wonders. Once through with no valves down and a second time through with all the valves down and we're good to go!
This product really works. I send the spit ball through my horn, rinse and clean it and send it through several more times depressing a different valve each time. They go right through the difficult places to clean.
These little "sponge balls" truly clean the horn by you just blowing air through the horn, although they say to discard after use...you can cleans them and put them in vinegar and reuse them...
