Comments about Holton H379 Intermediate French Horn:

I've played Conn, Yamaha french horns but switching to this was just wow! It worth the price, I now play in a symphony with this horn and it sounds great. It has a dark rich tone in all registers, also love the case. I would diffidently recommend this to everyone who is looking for a semi-professional, intermediate horn.

Great Intermediate Horn

Comments about Holton H379 Intermediate French Horn:

3 years ago, I switched from playing a Yamaha YHR-567 Geyer Series Intermediate Double French Horn to the Holton H379. It was a great switch: my tone broadened, the pitch was no longer sky high, and the volume capabilities also increased. Although the H379 is technically an intermediate horn, it leans more towards a basic professional horn than it does a beginner one. All registers of this horn are pretty solid, especially the mid/high ones. When trying out different horns, I noticed that this H379 had playing characteristics similar to the Yamaha YHR-668NII Professional Double French Horn. I actually liked this intermediate horn better. The only downside of this horn is perhaps a personal preference; while the sound it produces is solid and focused, some may not like that much of a "core" to the sound. As said in the description, this horn has a more focused and darker sound than the H179. I found this characteristic to be the only one holding this horn back from a professional status. This horn sounds best with a focused-sounding mouthpiece--I like the Vincent Bach 11. (The Holton-Farkas mouthpiece sounds better with the Holton H179 than this horn). A good horn & mouthpiece duo can really make all the difference with this horn...trying different mouthpieces with it might be a good idea. Although I intend on purchasing a professional horn in another year, the H379 is a highly recommendable intermediate horn. It has helped me get were I need to be, not only with progressing as a player, but also with making a high chairs in different musical groups. :-)

Comments about Holton H379 Intermediate French Horn:

I just retired from over 52 years of Government service and would like to renew my lifetime interest in playing the Frehch Horn. My interests lie in Semi-Classical and Classical. My proficiency no doubt will need great ;refreshment' and improvments to span my lifetime (I'm 76 years old now but have kept my 'lip' somewhat agile for the horn. Is ths a 'crazy' idea at my age?
