The Holton MF Horn (ST307) has been my main Bb trumpet for the last 9 years. During that time I have tried just about every other extra large bore horn out there, including Benge, Calicchio, Kanstul, Taylor, Stomvi, and others I can't recall. The Holton has the freest feel to the blow and the best core to the sound of all of them. Every other horn feels tight by comparison. And the Holton ST307 is not just a jazz horn. The horn has a very nice dark sound when played with a concert mouthpiece due to its relatively heavy construction. This is not a lightweight horn like many lead and commercial instruments. I have used it sitting right next to players using traditional Bach Strads, and the tonal characteristics are absolutely compatible. My Holton ST307 has been played in symphony orchestra, brass quintet, big band, wind band, and used for church solo work, and has excelled in every playing situation.

The MF ST307 is a great introductory professional lead trumpet. If you are looking for a large .468 bore trumpet that can play loud and high, this is your horn. Amazingly, with the right mouthpiece (like a Bach 3C or a Curry 80M ) the MF ST 307 can also be played in a HS or community symphonic band with great results. This trumpet should carry any kid thru high school symphonic band, but most likely will not be used by a serious performance majors in college outside of situations like jazz, drum corps and marching band. Many famous trumpet recordings have been made using this horn including many from the late beloved Maynard Ferguson who helped design this monster of a lead horn. Horn is a little on the bright side, this horn really projects. With a 10 1/2 C or a 14a4a this trumpet in the right hands will really sing. This is a large horn that takes a lot of wind to play well. This is not a good choice for most anyone under the eleventh grade. If you buy this trumpet, I recommend that you buy it in silver due to issues with its finish in lacquer.

Finding the right trumpet is a very personal and situational thing. I tried every horn I could find before deciding on the ST307... literally dozens of manufacturers and bore sizes. This Holton felt comfortable and natural from the start, like we were made for each other. I love how freely it blows. As importantly, WWBW gave me great service; they were highly professional and helpful. This is my 2nd ST307. It arrived in perfect condition and on time. Highly recommend the product and the company.

"Great new version of the 307"

I recently bought a ST307 and it is a great horn. It is the newer version ST307 made at the Conn Selmer factory in Elkhart Ind. not Elkhorn Wis(old Holton plant). The newer model St307 has a lighter bell than the olf Maynard models, which I think is an improvement. I know that Conn Selmer advertises this horn as a .468 bore butI dont think it is that large of a bore( more like a .462), it certainly doesn't feel that big to me in the sound or the "blow". Either way it is a great horn , very well made and light. I love this new MF Horn.
