To start, i have only been playing bassoon for three months. However, I habe played saxophone for four years and know a thing or two about reeds. To start, some of these reeds are defective, I have had three in the four i bought bt i think that is just bad luck. one of the defective reeds I shaved and it works great, and the one normal reed works beautifully, giving even a novice like me a deep, dark, solid tone. the other two are barely playable, but they could be refunded (I am just to lazy to do so). I recomend this to anybody like my band director recomended them to me.
I have been playing bassoon for 25 years. I used to use exclusively Jones reeds because I could just take them out of the box and play them without any scraping, etc. Since Jones went out of business, I haven't found a reed that I like. I was so excited to see Jones back, but these aren't the same reeds. They are wider and don't play as well as the original reeds. The scrape is uneven and, when looking at them from the tip, you can see the reed "waving". Gower reeds are more like the original Jones reeds. I think I will use them from now on.
I have been playing bassoon for a bit over a year now. With such a large and challenging instrument the little things-like your reed- can make all the difference. The Jones reeds are very constant and easy to break in. I would recommend them to any beginning bassoonist who does not have a source for hand made reeds.
I have to agree...these are not the same reeds! As an intermediate player with limited knowledge of how to adjust reeds, I loved the Jones. They were usually very playable without much adjustment. The last several I have received are pretty much unusable. I just thought it was me! I guess not!
These reeds are horrible, all the wrong sizes and almost impossible on high notes, honestly, you couldn't do much worse than Jones for bassoon reeds. I have played bassoon for seven years now and ever since I began playing I have loathed these reeds. They are far too long and far too wide and the wires often break if one attempts to adjust them. for those just starting, do not use them unless you have no other option. They will ruin your mouth position and teach you to bite, which are both horrible.
