The brand originated in Germany around 1925. Julius Keilwerth worked as an apprentice to the Kohlert Company in Czechoslovakia. After learning the trade, he began to make instruments out of a workshop in Germany with his brother Max. By World War II, Keilwerth was established as one of the largest saxophone manufacturers in the world. They have also provided the saxophone bodies to numerous other brands including Buffet Crampon, Armstrong, King, and Bundy.
With the rise in popularity of jazz music, the company knew it had to shift production. In 1986, Keilwert hired esteemed jazz musician, Peter Ponzol, to consult for a new line of jazz saxophones. The immediate result was the Modell Peter Ponzol alto and tenor saxophones which foreshadowed the now popular SX90R Series. The SX90R Series of saxophones was immensely commended among famous jazz musicians like Branford Marsalis, Courtney Pine, and Ernie Watts. The SX90R saxophones are known to possess a bright, focused sound that can project beyond the group for wonderful solo work. Without being too pronounced, this saxophone is also beautiful to blend with. Among the SX90R line is the Black Nickel Model Professional Tenor Saxophone. The stunning black nickel body of this saxophone is set off with a clear lacquer and features gold lacquered keys and mother-of-pearl key inlays.
The SX90R Vintage Model Professional Alto Saxophone is reminiscent of earlier saxophones with a brass body and black mother-of-pearl keys. Another popular item available from The Woodwind and Brasswind is the CX90 Prestige Tenor Saxophone. This instrument projects a mellow, warm sound from its elegant copper body with gold lacquered keys.
