I have been using synthetic reeds since 1974, when I played in the One O'Clock Band at North Texas. I have tried Bari, Fibrecane, Fibracell, and the Dieter Hahn reeds. I am currently using the Legeres on tenor, alto, and soprano Saxes. I find these reeds superior to all previous reeds I've tried in terms of consistency, response, timbre flexibility, and durability. I would highly recommend these reeds, especially for beginners who need the consistency aspect of these reeds.

I thought I would give these reeds a shot after hearing so many great things about them. I'm a cruise ship performer and wear traditional reeds out quickly and was seeking something that would last longer and sit for awhile without drying out and warping. While I really like them on my clarinet, they do not sound very resonant or consistent on my tenor. I think it may have something to do with the mouthpiece material, as I've always found synthetics to sound buzzy or distorted on a metal mouthpiece. May work fine for YOUR hard rubber, but I didn't like them on mine and switched right back to cane. Bottom line: good to have as an emergency backup, but don't rely on them to give you your best sound.

Great Reed

Comments about Legere Studio Cut Tenor Saxophone Reed:

The other day I received 2 Legere Studio Cut 2.5 tenor sax reeds and 2 Legere Classic 3.5 reeds. The tenor reeds played great. Nice edge, good sub tone, full sound. They really vibrated. One reed was superb, the other was very good. Yes even w/synth reeds no 2 reeds are exactly a like. I keep the Studio Cut reeds in my reed rotation along w/Rico and Rico Royal 2.5 reeds. I use a 60's vintage metal Otto Link 8* for all my tenor reeds with a silver Selmer ligature. Now all this being said I did not like the clarinet reeds. You can read about that on the clarinet page for Legere Classic Clarinet reeds.

Haven't played a cane reed in almost 10 years

Comments about Legere Studio Cut Tenor Saxophone Reed:

These reeds are awesome. I have used Legere reeds exclusively for almost 10 years. I use Legere Signature for concert band and Studio Cut for jazz and rock playing. For the Tenor I use a Studio Cut 2.75 on a Jody Jazz HR 7* mouthpiece, and it just sounds good. Responds great, never warps, never gets worn out, always ready to play. I can't recommend these highly enough to anyone that plays in ensembles and needs a piece of reliable kit to last them for months.

Absolutely great reeds!

Comments about Legere Studio Cut Tenor Saxophone Reed:

I've been a working musician for 48 years and I've tried just about every reed on the market. My brother recommended I try Legere reeds, and I was immediately impressed with how well these play. I originally started using the Signature series, but then tried the Studio series, and found that the Studio series gives me slightly better response on the extreme upper and lower registers. The sound is about as close as you can get to a cane reed, but without inconsistencies. The band I play in now I play tenor and alto, keyboards and percussion. So it's not unusual to go two or three tunes without playing sax. But when I do play either sax, the Legere reed is there ready to go. The quality and cut of these reeds are extrememly consistant. The sound and response is awesome, not to mention they are extremely durable. The availability of 1/4 strengths is absolutely genious, it's virtually impossible not to find the perfect strength reed. I would recommend these reeds to any player, student or professional. Bravo Legere!

When lined up on Dukoff the clear reed is hard to see, especially in dark bar.

Save the Prep Time!

Comments about Legere Studio Cut Tenor Saxophone Reed:

I've used these reeds for years ... mostly on Tenor and Alto. Way better than spending hours soaking, stroking, and all the other nonsense associated with natural reeds. Plus ... NO MOLD! While I do find these will "soften" a little after about 6 months, it's way better than buying cartons of natural reeds, finding a few good ones, and only to ultimately toss after only a few weeks of steady play. Spend your time on technique development, not experimenting on getting a reed to work right.

2nd or 3rd choice

By

Comments about Legere Studio Cut Tenor Saxophone Reed:

I have used rico plasticover, bari, and fibracell reeds with some success. Love the fibracell and plasticover, bari are a 2nd or 3rd choice or standby. I rate the legere lower because the performance does not warrant the expense. Alt range is slightly improved over cane reeds but the overall tone quality is inferior. I have been playing sax for 42 yrs, 33 of it professionally. I have used the plasticover since 1978 on bari sax and the fibracell for about 4 yrs on all my horns.

Why use anything else?

Comments about Legere Studio Cut Tenor Saxophone Reed:

I first got a Legere reed for my soprano. After 2 years I am still using the SAME reed! When I use another reed, my friends comment that my sound isn't as good. I've started using them on my other horns with the same results. Allow a couple of days to get used to it, after that you won't be sorry.

Stop Buying Boxes of 4!!!

By

from VA Beach

Comments about Legere Studio Cut Tenor Saxophone Reed:

You're probably like me, in that you'll find 4 solid playing reeds in a box for $25. I have been playing funk in a traveling band and have found that 1 reed MIGHT last me 2 rehearsals and a 1 gig! This is unacceptable for hard players. I have played a 2 3/4 Legere Studio Tenor reed on my DG SuperKing R&B for the last 2 months and IÆve got to tell you, you can't beat the longevity. I did not exaggerate when I said that I was getting 1 show our of traditional cane jazz-cut reeds. I have already saved almost $90 in 2 months by using Legere. IÆm not as fond of these for studio work as a solo instrument, for that I remain loyal to cane. Section work, however, these will project very well and give you the ability to balance evenly throughout the session. As far as live work- there are few equals for the working musician. I needed to be able to be consistent with my reeds, while having one that was not as brittle as conventional cane in both the structural integrity and in solidity of the reed heart. Not only do these have that, but these reeds will speak for players of any genre. But as a side note, they are a bit too abrasive for folk-rock! The fine details: No- these do not have the exact same sound as cane. Wood is able to produce a smoother edge (even in jazz playing), whereas synthetic is a bit ôbuzzyö. But lets face it- if youÆre a legit player, chances are youÆre processing your sound through a system. As long as the mic is on, add some reverb and no one will be the wiser. No- these do not feel like cane. But after 30 minutes you forget all about the difference in feel and enjoy your show. Yes- these are worth the price for one. Yes- TheyÆre still somewhat delicate, but if youÆre not using power tools nearby, youÆll be able to get months of use out of one reed. Stop getting 4 out of 10 solid playing reeds. Synthetics are consistent and wonÆt splinter your lips when youÆre break-dancing during your next live solo!!!

You would be crazy not to try one

By

Comments about Legere Studio Cut Tenor Saxophone Reed:

I originally had doubts about any manufactured reed until I tried this one. We all know the typical trials and errors we go through to get the perfect reed every time we buy a box. For some of us, it may even be exciting and fun to see how many good ones we get in a box even after we still have to make adjustments to them. These reeds are truly remarkable in that they work immediately with no need to wet them or to trim them. They last a long time and keep their excellent tone much longer than you would ever expect. It is worth paying the higher price to get at least one and see for yourself. I play tenor sax with an Otto link metal mouthpiece, and have been very pleased (and surprised) about the quality of this reed. It might take a small adjustment at first compared to your cane reeds, but then again most cane reeds need adjustments for each one you use and they never continue to work well for long (especially, it seems, when you need it the most). Don't buy this reed if you enjoy the challenge of buying a whole box of reeds that hopefully will produce one or two that work for a few sessions
