Unfortunately for me, I wasn't introduced to Lesher reeds until just a few months ago, when I randomly picked out about three brands to try. These reeds are quite simply one of the best, professionally-made or not. Within seconds of being damp they can produce a good tone (for those quick two-seconds-before-the-conert reed disasters - they happen to all of us). The cork is usually nice and soft, and typically requires little or no cork grease, something I always find very convenient. A drawback is that you usually don't get very high-quality wood with these reeds. But they manage perfectly fine and last a long, long time. Also, the thread is just plain cool. You just never see two-colored threads. Awesome.

I got two new reeds by Lesher. These reeds make your sound soar with a fullness and richness the oboe deserves. Also, once you find that pitch and perfect placement of the reeds, they stay in tune (just about). HOWEVER, not all is perfect. I don't know if it was the particular two I brought, but you have to SOAK these reeds for a looong time-- me: for at least...7-10min or more. Also, they kept trying to close on me and always dry out if you're not playing constantly. Best if played in a warmer, humid room. Other than that, I'm going to try Berlin P. reeds just to make sure.

Comments about Marlin Lesher Oboe Reed:

My child is in an 8th grade symphonic band and said this reed has made an obvious difference in the sound and tone of her oboe.

    Didn't get to use it

Comments about Marlin Lesher Oboe Reed:

I have been playing oboe for a few weeks now and this reed was recommended to me by a peer who has been playing oboe for about 5 years. I was extremely disappointed by this reed. I soaked it for the first time and started putting it in my oboe, and after lightly trying to push it in I realized I would need cork grease. I lightly started twisting it out before my hand slipped and the reed completely fell apart. The cane fell right off the staple like it wasn't tied to anything, the thread completely unraveling as well. I was very disappointed- the tie is pretty, yet dysfunctional. Not sure if this reed was a fluke or all of their reeds are this fragile, but I do not recommend.

Best Oboe Reeds You Can Buy!!

Comments about Marlin Lesher Oboe Reed:

Marlin Lesher oboe reeds are the best oboe reeds you can buy! Each reed is constructed beautifully by hand. I can guarentee this becuase my mother is the chief reed maker for the company! She turns out over a thousand of these reeds by hand every week. I play the oboe occasionally and love to play these reeds. Thanks to all who buy and support ML REEDS. If you are looking for a good quality handcrafted reed you cannot go wrong with Marlin Lesher oboe reeds!!

    Great reeds, great value

Comments about Marlin Lesher Oboe Reed:

I am an oboist and former band director who now plays in pit orchestras and at church. I know how to make my own reeds, but often find I would rather spend my time playing rather than making reeds. The Lesher reeds are ready to play as soon as you buy them. I do agree that they need a good soak to play nicely. They have a nice, open tone quality (not stuffy or leaky like many commercially available reeds) and they are easy to articulate (it is difficult to tongue crisply on some reeds). Intonation is consistent throughout the range of the oboe, whereas some reeds sag or have wild variations in pitch in the middle range (usually around Bb or C above middle C). Low notes (middle c and lower) come out with ease, even when tonguing. I do usually buy a reed that is a degree harder than I need and scrape it down a bit to suit me best.

    no problem for new oboist

Comments about Marlin Lesher Oboe Reed:

My 12 yr old daughter had been taking sax lessons for about a year, then wanted to try oboe. Music store offered a Lesher med-soft for her first go... and she was able to play a few notes first lesson! She continues with Lesher, and I would not discourage new players from this reed. It also has lasted a long time. Very high quality and great price!

    Not the best out there...

Comments about Marlin Lesher Oboe Reed:

In the beginning, I thought this reed was awesome. However, I soon saw the light. These reeds dry up and crack within 2 weeks or so and I have always found these reeds to produce a shaky and unpredictable(as far as tuning goes). They need a lot of adjustment to make them livable and aren't worth the effort. To any student out there, I suggest the Chatier long scrape reeds. MUCH better than these.

    Nice tone!

Comments about Marlin Lesher Oboe Reed:

I've used different reeds in the past, mostly Fox-Renard Artist and Jones with satisfactory results but these reeds were way better. The tone was more velvety and smooth as opposed to the typical bright and honky sound I get with the previous reeds. I did have to shave down the spine a tiny bit to make it easier to play but that's more my personal preference. A true oboist is always fiddling with reeds. Other than that, these reeds play great right out of the tube!

Reeds have great tone for price

Comments about Marlin Lesher Oboe Reed:

Theese reeds have great tone quality and pitch. They are also the best price for there quality. The only downer is that they dry very quickly and are vulnerable to break if not soaked.

    Great Reeds

Comments about Marlin Lesher Oboe Reed:

These reeds have the best tone out of any reeds wwbw offers. The Selmer's sound is too stuffy, and the woodwind reeds are too harsh and raucous. Being a former sax player, I have major problems finding a mellow tone out of the oboe, because I'm not used to using that little air too produce sound. The Lesher allows for good control, and this particular model is a great learning and early performance reed.
