If you research the history of Parduba mouthpieces and also Harry James you will find this mouthpiece was a big part of his sound. I have played a lot of mouthpieces thru the years just for trial purposes to find out that what works best for a person has a lot to do with their lip and teeth structure and what sound you are looking for. I like Big Band swing and Jazz so this mouthpiece works great for me. I have dealt with the WWBW for years and they are honest and straight forward people to deal with. Please research Parduba and Harry James before you purchase this because not all people can play these. I had a Jerome Callet copy of this mouthpiece and it was not as good and 4 times the price.
If you'll looking for another mouthpiece that will magically allow you to play like Harry James, keep moving. Trying to use this mouthpiece without good fundamentals and patience will only lead to frustration. To have success with a parduba you have to become accustomed to it by practicing for at least couple of months. The mouthpiece has a nice warm sound and does aid in the upper resistor. If used correctly, you'll get a nice warm tone and flexibility. You might feel that the mouthpiece is too tight when trying it out, but that is how it was designed to be. Use less air and pressure when playing. Also surprisingly, the mouthpiece becomes VERY open high G and beyond.
It's a great mouthpiece that doesn't sacrifice tone and still helps you with your tone. I can play bright jazz songs and also play classic music with these mouthpieces. The rims are very comfortable, but this is not a magic mouthpiece, like all mouthpiece you still need practice and dedication to improve your playing.
I haven't played the trumpet in 50 years, since being in college. I recently bought one at a garage sale but had problems with high notes because the mouth piece was too big for me. I ordered the Parduba James Model Trumpet Mouthpiece and it has helped considerably. I can still do the low notes but also can reach the highs. The price from Woodwind/Brasswind was the best I could find on line--even better than eBay.
No doubt this a lead mouthpiece. The first thing that I noticed was how amazingly playable it is...and comfortable. The second thing I noticed was how bright it was--almost too bright. It draws from some of the full-timbre of the horn, but the playability and the extended range in the upper register is, in my mind, a balanced trade-off. Otherwise I would have given 5 stars. Plays a bit sharp as well. Overall...I am quite happy with it. More and more so as I experience more playing time on it. Give one a try!
