Remo Controlled Sound Batter HeadIntroduced in 1968, CONTROLLED SOUND heads are single-ply Ambassador-weight heads with a 5 mil thick black or clear dot in the center of the head. This combination offers a controlled, centered sound without undesirable overtones. These dual-zone heads have a combination of medium and heavy-duty drumhead characteristics. The outer area of the head's playing surface offers a midrange tone and sensitivity while the laminated center dot eliminates high frequency overtones and adds durability and tonal focus to meet the demands of heavier hitters.

I have been using these heads for over 30 years-in marching band, and all the other musical projects I got into in that period. They were the only heads my drum section could consistently count on in any weather, any situation. John Bonham used them on his Ludwig Vistalite kit-just look at any old footage of Zeppelin. I love them for hard rock and metal-any time you need something virtually indestructible, these are worth every penny. They also look cool if you use them on every drum, including the snare.(I know, most people use something else on the snare-but I don't.) They sound great as well-they are a classic for a reason. Durability, appearance, value, classic appeal-you cannot beat that combination.
I switched out my Evans EC2 heads on my Tama Crestar (1986) kit because I needed more attack and projection. I was talked into these Remo black dots by a friend. After putting them on and properly tuning them, I was blown away to say the least! On the first play out, I couldn't believe how much these heads made the drums cut through the other instruments and give such clear controlled sound and incredible projection. The sound was really focused but yet controlled, no matter if I played wood or nylon tips. The sound really fit well with the tunes we were playing and I almost felt like a professional! LOL They also play extremely well by using the area outside the dot, this gives you a well rounded warm sounding tone and really achieves the sound of two heads in one. To better understand, just listen to some early Rush songs and go to their web site and see that even Neil Peart played them on his Superstars. Then note on some of the pics, the stick marks on the heads being both focused on the dot as well as on the outer edges. If played from the outside inward, you can achieve tones from warm and focused to cutting attack and focused. These are incredible heads and have been around forever too. Don't hesitate, just try them...you will not be disappointed in them at all. Keep playin, peace...
I liked the head because I like the middle black dot that gives you a good tone but the problem is if you don't no how to tune a drum head try to learn because your drum will sound bad and no one likes that! I play the snare drum and the head works perfect you could use this head 4 a snare or you could use it for a tom whatever you have you just got to no how to tune the head to whatdrum. REMO DRUM HEADS ARE THE WAY TO GO!!!
