First of all, I have these installed on the toms of a Ludwig kit, using Remo Fiberskyn3 heads as both batter and resonant heads. When I first installed the Muffl Rings, my kit was in a very large practice room, and with little tuning gave the toms that great thunderous "big band tom-tom" sound that I've loves since I was a kid. But when I moved the drums into a much smaller (9' x 12') room, the sound became muffled in the extreme, almost dead. It took a great many hours of tuning to get to a sound that I could be happy with. In my opinion, yes they are well worth the money, but if you do a lot of traveling as you play, be prepared for a lot of re-tuning.
Basically these rings, I have used them on my kick drums since as long as I can remember, give you the direct impact of a hit without all the rattling and wavy ringing that comes with the natural sound of the drums. The assembly is pretty straight forward; there is a plastic ring with a removable foam ring inside the plastic ring. You put these underneath the head of the drum, and then put your heads on as you normally would and tune them up. The plastic and/or foam ring will be pressed against the underside of your drum head and dampen any excessive ringing. I recently started putting these on my toms and snares too, because I hate putting duct tape and dead rings on the heads all the time. They sound great, if you need more than just a dry attack sound, remove the foam ring and the plastic ring will dampen it just enough to control the ringing. I love them, 4 stars because you have to take the heads off to install them.
These just work; they sound awesome on toms. They let you get a nice studio sound out of the worst drums (school sets). Get 'em, you will not regret it!
I've always spent numerous hours trying to get a clean sound out of my toms. I wish I would have known of these when I was a kid, if they made them then. These will absolutely give you that perfect sound.
