My background: 13 years classically trained on the violin, 4 years on the piano.
I decided to teach myself the cello about a year and a half ago, and ended up going through a couple rental cellos before deciding to purchase this one. It may just be my specific case, but I suggest not ordering used, as the first used cello I received was badly damaged from shipping. It was packaged carelessly and the instrument was seriously damaged by the lack of common sense in packing it. I even ordered a hard shelled case and asked them to put the cello in the case before shipping it. Instead, I received the hard shelled case in one huge box, and the cello in another all damaged. Besides that, when I finally received a cello in good condition, I noticed a couple things:
The image is misleading.... the actual wood varnish is considerably lighter, also the tailpiece and the tuning pegs were ebony, not the nice rosewood with nice inlays in the picture (which is not a problem as they can be replaced). Also there is not as much flaming on the edges and the back as the picture suggests, but nonetheless, the cello is still aesthetically pleasing.
Out of the box, the cello sounded pretty harsh. It came with a belgian bridge and some very metallic sounding strings, most likely since the cello is from China, and a more piercing sound is considered beautiful there. The bridge needed to be shaved down and reshaped, and the sound post needed some adjusting. After I took the cello to a luthier who adjusted the soundpost, replaced the bridge, and replaced the strings with some dominant strings, the cello started to sing. It's amazing how these adjustments really brought out the tones of the cello. This cello really projects its sound well, and the tones are complex and deep. I haven't taken the cello yet to a concert hall, but from the way it sounds in a large living room, I'd imagine it would absolutely sing when placed in a good acoustical environment. This cello definitely requires some modifications out of the box and adjustments, but once you do make the investment, time and effort, you'll realize this cello is really a nicely made instrument which can potentially sound amazing.
