When you are playing live and frequently, these reeds are tops - always ready to go without a long 'soak'. If you are looking for a bright, punchy reed that is ready to go at a moments notice, give these reeds a try. I have been playing on these reeds for 15 years, and have had maximum success. If you are performing live and need that little extra edge to cut through the electric instruments on stage, this is the way to go!

I used these Plasticovers when they first came out in in the late sixties or early seventies. They were great. I play almost daily. I stopped using them about 20 years ago because the standard dropped and they were no longer consistent. Tried them again about 8 years ago and found them to be even worse, so I have been playing Rico Royals 95% of the time, but boy, is it time consuming to get one to sound like you want it! When you do find a good one, they can sound great (the Royals), but it's a lot of work & very hit or miss. They are VERY inconsistent. I've tried all of the more expensive reeds, but they don't suit me nor do the synthetics. So now there's a new packaging. Maybe the latest Plasticovers are back to their old standard, so I am going to buy several boxes with a positive attitude and hopefully I'll be really happy again. After all these years, I still adore the saxophone, but often I really envy those guitar & keyboard players who can go to their instruments and know what they're going to sound like just about every time! We have sent men to the moon, surely someone can come up with a synthetic reed that is going to sound as good as a good cane reed and be playable every time. I've dreamed about that all of my long career and if such a product were to exist I would be prepared to pay handsomely for it!

Excellent Reeds

Comments about Rico Plasticover Tenor Saxophone Reeds:

These reeds work great for a colleague and I. Sometimes we are unable to soak our reeds before a rehearsal or gig and these solve that problem with the plastic coating. They are extremely valuable for those who double, as normal cane reeds tend to dry out while playing on the other instrument. Full artificial reeds are also good but are hit or miss with different instruments and mouthpieces. Plus, they cost much more. I am very happy with these reeds.

Only reeds I play in performance

Comments about Rico Plasticover Tenor Saxophone Reeds:

Play Otto Link 7* for years on my Yamaha Custom 875. Played Legere and Rico royal for many years on this and then my teacher suggested trying these plasticover reeds. I haven't looked back - they're all I play when performing. They don't warp as easy as normal rico (and where I play the ventilation system dries out my reeds very quickly so this can be important for me) and seem higher quality where every reed is playable. Love the bright sound and reliability so they're worth the price.

Rico Plasticover

Comments about Rico Plasticover Tenor Saxophone Reeds:

I used these reeds for marching and pep band. They had decent performance; however, the plastic coating gradually chipped off over the school year. It chipped off where I held my embrochure and at the place where the reeds met the mouthpiece. These reeds are NOT something you would want to use for concert band; their tone is not concert quality. However, they work well for marching band.

Most Consistent in Performance

Comments about Rico Plasticover Tenor Saxophone Reeds:

Generally I would find 2 or maybe 3 reeds per box that I felt I could use for a gig. It got to be pretty expensive to buy a box of 5 reeds only to find 2 that I could get the sound I was looking for out of a reed. Much of this has to do with the mouth pieces as well. Since switching to the Rico Plasticovers, I find that I am consistently getting 5 out of 5 gig ready reeds for my soprano and alto and 3 to 4 out of 5 for my tenor. I have never found this consistency with any other reed. You just put it on the mouthpiece and it is show time. I have been using the Rico plasticovers for maybe 15 years now and have no desire to experiment with other reeds. They work for me.

Too buzzy for me -

By

Comments about Rico Plasticover Tenor Saxophone Reeds:

I admit I was just curious so I bought 2.5s for tenor based on other reviews. I tried them on my Yamaha 5C and Rico Graphonite B7 - very buzzy on both. This may be what your looking for, but it's not for me. One thing I have to say, every one I tried was consistent in character...bzzz. There's probably a place for them (I remember some cold winter nights in marching band...), but can't see them for daily use.
