I had the opportunity to evaluate the Selmer crystal vs. the C85 120. I was converting from a Selmer HS** that has served me well for many years. I like some aspects of the crystal, but expected a brighter sound which I didn't get. I did with the C85. What I learned later is that crystal mouthpieces are best tried using a softer reed than what one normally uses or if you use a 3 1/2 use a 2 1/2. I would like to try it again using what I know now.
I first tried the christal mouth piece back in 1963. As I didn't take care of it, it chipped. I returned to the crystal several years ago, and I am loving the warm sound. I play a Noblet Professional (1930's?) and am living a dream!
First, I ordered it a Pomarico ruby mouthpiece. Later I ordered a Selmer crystal facing 1. This second mouthpiece I like more. It is easier to blow. They have a similar sound but the Selmer is more smooth and round. I use Vandoren reeds v12 strong 3 or Gonzalez F.O.F.
