Well after 5 years the screws on my old Selmer Lig started to lose their grip. I guess after turning the screws to tighten the ligature the bottom screw finally gave out.
So I ordered another Selmer lig from WWBW. Just to compare it against the hot new lig I also ordered a Francois Louis lig. Well I guess the higher price of the FL lig does not make it better. It plays, but to me the sound is loosey-goosey. The Selmer lig seems to have more focus and more core. To me the FL lig is a bit hard to deal with, getting the reed in and lined up.
So I stand by my previous review and agree with the other reviewer about Selmer ligs. On Otto Link metal mpcs they work very well.
I bought my 1st Selmer lig in '94. This is my 3rd one in 16 years so on the average a Selmer lig is
lasting 5.33 years. That is not to bad at all.
I play tenor a lot, just about every day. That is a lot of turns on the lig screws, so 3 ligs in 16 years is not a bad percentage at all.
I bought this to try on my new vintage Otto Link mouthpiece. I couldn't even put a reed on because the ligature is so narrow! If you have a new Link try a BG jazz revelation ligature instead.
I play on a Guardala Brecker, and decided to try this ligature after seeing Michael Brecker playing with what appeared to be a Selmer lig on his mouthpiece. The difference was amazing! The reeds play with more response and control than the Rovner ligature that came with the mouthpiece, and overall the horn played with more volume and response than before. Out of curiosity I tried the ligature on a Dukoff M8, a Berg Larsen 95/1,and a Bari WT III 8*, with the same results; the mouthpieces played with more response, volume, and control than with their stock ligatures. My recommendation? Throw away whatever ligature came with your metal mouthpiece and replace it with the Selmer ligature. You won't be disappointed!
"Great sound...wonderful flexibility". Bull. I only gave it two stars because I didn't want to be mean about it. I bought this ligature and a Rovner light ligature to replace the stock lig on my Berg Larsen metal mouthpiece. If you have ever bought a Berg before you know they come with a decent lig out of the box. I didn't find that the Selmer "focused" the sound or improved the tone but found the original lig to work much better. I tried the Rovner and really liked the added control of the reed. If you don't care about sound, save yourself thirty bucks and buy some off-brand student lig. It'll sound the same.
The Selmer ligature for metal mpcs works very well for my metal vintage FL Otto Link mpc. It gives the sound a boost. It plays more focused than the Rovner type ligatures. It also seals better than the Link ligature and projects the sound better than the Rovner type ligs and the Link lig.
Try it, you'll like it.
