OVERVIEW

The resurrection of the great, vintage sax secrets.

Inspired by the Mark VI model released in 1954, the Selmer 74 Reference 54 tenor is a professional saxophone that integrates the Mark VI's legendary acoustic characteristics with innovative modern key work and stable intonation. A major favorite among jazz saxophonists the Reference 54 offers a rich, centered, throaty sound that even "barks" well in the lower register. The key work of the Selmer 74 feels close to the body and is extremely fluid which reacts well to even the most wicked licks. Use of kid leather pads with plastic tone boosters projects the sound and adds flexibility. Complete with shaped case, Selmer Paris S80 mouthpiece, cap and ligature, and Selmer saxophone care products. Its finish is a brushed lacquer applied to both the body and keys which give the Reference 54 a vintage appeal.

Better than a Mark VI!

Comments about Selmer Paris Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone:

I had personally played on a 1973 Mark Vi that had been repadded for about 6 months prior to buying the horn. Within the 2 months before buying the horn, I had also tried an older Selmer Series II with a nickel plated selmer neck and another early Mark VI. Also, I had played a Conn Naked Lady. While play testing this horn, I compared it with a Selmer Series II black nickel plated horn and wow... The difference was unbelievable. I would never take any horn over my reference. This horn plays better than any horn I have ever played and feels better too. The action is fast and the sound is phat. In my opinion, it is even better than the Mark VI. It is well worth the money spent and I will be playing this horn my entire life!

Comments about Selmer Paris Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone:

I play the only tenor in a jazz band in Chicago. Ive been playing for 18 years. I currently own a Series III Alto, one of these and a legendary 61 Mark VI Tenor. While I do play the VI in the band (as it does have a better overall sound to it) I always practice with my 54. I love it. I bought it after I got my VI not to replace it but to preserve the VI. The action feels so natural. I ussaly play on a medium metal or a light rubber mouth peice and the sound is just amazing.

Reference 54 has a soul

Comments about Selmer Paris Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone:

My fellow saxophonists, if your looking at pro horns to buy please take the time to play through all the major brands before making your final decision. I spent 2 days at the WWBW showroom in South Bend playing 11 different horns. We got great customer service from Mark our salesman. My top three came down to Selmer Ref 54, Yamaha Custom Z and Yani 9930 (Keilwerth's, P. Mauriats were terrible). Response, intonation and sound were great for all three. But the Selmer Reference 54 had a soul and unmistakable character that pulled at my heartstrings like no other(think 65 shelby mustang). Everyone has to find their own horn, but this one found me. I love it!

Selmer Reference 54

Comments about Selmer Paris Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone:

I purchased my "54" about 2 years ago (2009), and I am so happy with it, I can't believe anyone would play anything else. I play Swing/Jazz/Rock. This horn handles it all with ease and most of all A fantastic Tenor sound that is unmatchable by any other instrument. I traded my Yamaha 62 MKII for the Selmer and I will never play anyting else. If you are looking for sound quality and beautiful craftsmanship, this horn is for you. At first glance the price seems a little high, but after playing my "54" I would pay twice the price and consider it a bargain!

Ref 54 IS a great modern horn!

Comments about Selmer Paris Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone:

I play both the 54 alto and tenor. I love these new horns for several reasons, but I'll just keep this review to the tenor. For my hands/body ergonomics, these saxes were laid out very well. I had both horns set-up by Tim Glessman of Sax Alley in Windsor, CO. The key heights, spring tension, pads treated, etc. The 54 has the more focused sound of the modern tenors, not the American vintage sound. If that's what you want, go toward the Reference 36 if you want to stay with Selmer. Another great horn I own! I can truly play these horns faster than my old American vintage saxes. I also love that the scale is so much more even on these horns than any others I've owned. I even had more trouble with the older SA-80-II's I've played. I definitely recommend this horn as an investment for any intermediate to pro player that will pay dividends in spades years from now.

A must have!

Comments about Selmer Paris Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone:

When my parents bought me this saxophone my freshman year I fell in love with it. Now four years later I find myself loving it even more. It has gotten me two All-State honors placements as well as several other musical honors. Over time I've found the intonation to be slightly off, but that could be explained with my lack of switching the pads adequately. But overall, I've found my saxophone to play better than any other brand I've tried (and I've tried several). This saxophone has a powerhouse sound, wonderful control, and can sustain everyday wear and tear as well as longer performances and gigs. From the moment I was given this saxophone, I've enjoyed every second.

Comments about Selmer Paris Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone:

If you want a Mark VI, but canÆt afford one, this is the next best thing. It comes extremely close and does an excellent job. The feel and look are fantastic, and the tone is clear and free blowing. In my opinion, this horn is only second the Legendary VI itself.

It's got to be any tenor mans dream horn. Smooth, effortless; I found the perfect horn. I like the horn better than my Mark VII. It's a perfect fit for small hands like mine.

What an amazing sax!

Comments about Selmer Paris Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone:

I was planning to go to college as a music major and needed something that I could play easily, had a nice sound, and would be good enough to take to college. Originally, I was planning on purchasing a Yanigasawa after hearing numerous good things about them. I was given the Selmer Reference 54 to try, among Yamahas and other Selmers. As soon as I started playing it, the only thing I could think was, "WOW!" It has a beautiful dark tone and a very attractive vintage look and I knew from the very moment I picked it up that I need not look at any other saxophone. This was the one! I have been playing it for a few years and have found it to be excellent. It rarely needs to go in for repair and I have been complimented numerous times on its wonderful sound. All the other students are amazed at what a great instrument I have, and some directors have even commented on it. My suggestion to you if you're looking for a new tenor: Get a Selmer Reference 54!

Comments about Selmer Paris Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone:

I'd highly recommend this horn. It has a very solid center and is incredibly free blowing. It doesn't have the same "something" that the old VI's have but it definitely comes close. Great horn.
