Shure Beta 87A Supercardioid Condenser MicThe Shure Beta 87A Supercardioid Condenser Mic is a new take on an old classic. The Beta 87 was consistently a top choice of performers and audio technicians due to its accuracy, detail, and rich vocal production. Now this longstanding favorite has been redesigned as the Shure Beta 87A. It has a thicker handle that gives a more comfortable feel when hand-held. It also includes a new break-resistant swivel adapter and low-frequency roll-off to compensate for proximity effect and to prevent boominess. The supercardioid pattern provides high gain-before-feedback, and its 3-stage pop filter minimizes breath pop and noise. Frequency response: 50Hz-18kHz.Requires phantom power.

I have been a professional singer/guitarist for over 30 years and have always been partial to Shure microphones, especially the trusty SM58. About three years ago I took the plunge and invested in a condenser concert microphone, a Shure 87A. What a difference this microphone has made in my vocals. It captures every nuance of a performance. It took a little while for me to get used to using this microphone, as closer proximity results in a slight increase in bass response. Thus soft, passages sung close to the microhone are accentuated and appear warmer, while louder passages benefit from backing away a bit. The 87A has excellent feedback rejection and thus is naturally "hotter" than a SM58. I find this microphone is best used for jazz and pop music. For louder "rock and roll," I continue to prefer my SM58, since it provides a more basic and even response. In summary, if you are a singer that appreciates clarity and sensitive response, this is the microphone for you. Do keep in mind that this microphone requires phantom power from the board as it does not use a battery.
The difference between this mic and a sm58 is ridiculous. SM58's sound very muddy with no brilliance and the beta 87 is the exact opposite. It's a very clean and clear mic with a smooth top end that is not harsh. I have a tenor voice and it fits my range and style perfectly. The only other mics that are comparable are over 600 dollars, and I don't really think it's necessary to get something more than a beta 87 unless money is no object.
