Founded in 1905 by Eugène Van Doren, the Vandoren company quickly became a leader in reeds for single-reed instruments like clarinets and saxophones. The Vandoren company continues to be a family business, now in its fourth generation. The reed manufacturer crafts some of the highest quality reeds in the world, made with cane they grow in their own fields in southern France.
Vandoren’s reputation began with clarinet reeds, and they continue to be a core product. The manufacturer produces clarinet reeds for all types of clarinet, including the most popular styles: Bb, Eb and bass. All Vandoren reeds are consistent and reliable and are incredibly popular in educational and professional settings.
Pronounced B-flat, this clarinet is the most popular among students, intermediate players and professional clarinetists. As such, Vandoren offers a wide variety of reeds for the Bb clarinet, including their incredibly popular Traditional Bb reeds as well as the V12, V21, 56 Rue Lepic, Black Master and White Master reeds. All of the Vandoren Bb clarinet reeds come in a range of strengths to suit any player and any style music.
The Eb clarinet (E-flat) is slightly smaller and higher pitched than the Bb clarinet. This instrument is somewhat less popular that the Bb because it carries quite high melodies, so solo repertoire is limited. However, it is used in orchestras, concert bands and marching bands, so Vandoren offers the Traditional, V12 and V21 reeds for Eb clarinets. You can purchase Vandoren Eb clarinet reeds in a variety of strengths – be sure to test out a couple different styles and strengths to determine the best reed for you.
The bass clarinet plays an octave below the Bb clarinet and features a curved bell at the bottom and a curved neck at the top of the body. Bass clarinets are featured regularly in orchestras, wind ensembles and concert bands. Vandoren bass clarinet reeds include Traditional, V12 and V21. All of the Vandoren bass clarinet reeds come in a range of strengths to use with any style music.
The saxophone, another incredibly popular woodwind instrument, also uses single reeds, which Vandoren excels at crafting. The company offers saxophone reeds for the alto, bari and bass, soprano and tenor sax. As with their clarinet reeds, Vandoren saxophone reeds are reliable and allow the saxophonist to play with consistency and produce pure sound.
The alto saxophone, a beloved instrument for beginners and professionals alike, deserves the best reed possible to make the saxophonist sound their best. Vandoren provides a variety of top-quality alto sax reeds, including the Traditional box as well as Java Green and Java Red, the V12 and V21, and the ZZ styles. If you’re not sure which one to pick, Vandoren offers mix cards so you can try out a sampling of their alto sax reeds.
The tenor sax, slightly larger, is as popular as the alto sax. Vandoren offers the same selection of reeds for tenor, including the Traditional box, Java Green and Java Red, the V12 and V21, and the ZZ styles, plus the V16 tenor sax reeds. You can also purchase a mix card of tenor reeds to try out the variety.
The bari sax and bass sax are very large instruments, generally more popular with advanced saxophone players. Most young students would have a difficult time supporting these larger horns, so they are steered to alto and tenor saxes to start. But for bari sax, Vandoren offers the same excellent selection of reeds, including Traditional, ZZ, Green Java and Red Java, and V16. Vandoren also offers Traditional bass sax reeds.
The smallest and highest pitched saxophones are the soprano and the sopranino. Again, these instruments are usually played by advanced saxophonists who almost always play the alto or tenor in addition. Vandoren offers a huge selection of soprano reeds, including Traditional, ZZ, Green Java and Red Java, and V16. Vandoren also offers Traditional sopranino sax reeds.
While not quite as popular as the clarinet and the saxophone, there are the double reed instruments including the bassoon, English horn and oboe. Vandoren offers the Heckel bassoon reed, an English horn reed and a single oboe reed for the double reed woodwind players.
