The 5RV is a very well mad mouthpiece with a large open tip. The tone quality is nice and rounded and the mouthpiece's versatility gives it a wide range of tones. You get this feeling of precision and control, as advertised It's the world standard mouthpiece for a reason.
If you came from a collection of plastic student mouthpieces, like the Hite Premiere, this ebonite mouthpiece may take some time to adjust to. The material is more flexible than plastic, so it takes some time to experiment with your newfound range of tones. You might find the resistance a little awkward at first. Nevertheless, this is a big cut above all plastic mouthpieces that I have tried.
Choose this mouthpiece if you play all kinds of music. Otherwise, get some of the more specialized mouthpieces in Vandoren's line. The 5RV can respectably handle them all, but the others are just more suited.
Comes in flashy silver box with the mouthpiece secured between two foam cubes. Vandoren packaged just the mouthpiece, so there are no extras, not even a manual.
