I admit to being a gear freak, lets get that out front. I think I have 10 ligatures at this point for my clarinet. This one is a joy to play, it opens up my clarinet and makes a beautiful sound as well as smoothing out the register changes. Throat tones were also better and the over all response of the clarinet was improved. It is not stuffy or muffled sounding at all, but rather very open and alive. It is a very musical ligature, it just does everything right. Easy to use and worth every penny.
The Vandoren Klassik manages to give a round, full tone without givving the "edge" that many other ligatures do. The reeds last much longer as they are not crushed at pressure points. The projection and clarity is wonderful and can be heard perfectly from the back of the audience.Wasily adjustable, it allows for a multitude of colors and tones. Although this is a string ligature, it does not muffle the tone. It gives a precise note that has less extra noises like "spitty" and "air rushing" noises. This ligature is the one that I use most of the time. To my knowledge, this supasses the Optimumn, any Rovners, and Olegature
I've tried many metal ligatures and also the Rovner Dark Bb clarinet ligature, and the Klassik has to be the best. On every other ligature, it seems like there is a "tightness" that somewhat constricts your sound making your notes hit overtones (squeaks) easily.
I have had this Vandoren Klassik ligature for about a month now and it is by far the best I have tried. The sound is smooth, deep, and rich. Tightening is easy, and it offers a fairly good range of tonal color changes by tightening or loosening at either end. For a fabric lig, the projection and articulation a quite good. For large ensemble stuff I sometimes use a bonade inverted lig. works wonders with a Selmer Signature amd any good medium to medium close faced mouthpiece. Worth the High priece tag for sure.
As clarinetists (or any instrumentalists for that matter) we strive to emulate the maximum expressive capabilities of the human voice; thus, we search for equipment that aids us in finding our own voices on the instrument. After having experimented with countless ligatures (most recently the Vandoren Optimum and a piece of string tied around the mouthpiece as is common practice in Germany), I have found that the Vandoren Klassik Ligature makes my goal of singing through the clarinet far simpler. The unparalleled fluidity of air through the instrument results in an extraordinary ease of transforming mere ?clarinet playing? into ?clarinet artistry.? Essentially, this ligature is an easier-to-use version of German string ligatures, widely considered to be the ideal ligature. Vandoren?s take on the ligature is superior in that changing reeds is far easier as one does not have to repeatedly retie the string. Moreover, changing between Bb and A clarinets is manageable provided the mouthpiece cork is well-greased and the ligature is relatively tight. Although the response and clarity of articulation of this ligature is not as good as metal ligatures (such as the Optimum), it certainly is not egregiously subpar or a ?deal breaker? by any means; in fact, it is quite responsive in comparison to other non-metal ligatures. Furthermore, just as the other ligatures in the Vandoren line (the Optimum and Leather ligatures) allow for a variety of possible timbres via three different pressure plates, experimenting with various tightening configurations of the independent knots can create unique tone colors with this ligature. It also easily fits the new Vandoren Master?s mouthpieces (CL4 and CL5) if one has an aversion to metal ligatures (i.e. the requisite Vandoren M/O hybrid). On a more practical note, due to the great blowing ease associated with this ligature, the perceived strength of reeds is roughly 0.5 less and must be accounted for to insure a focused sound with the same complexity to its core. The Vandoren Klassik Ligature is a highly-recommended addition to any clarinetist?s assortment of equipment. In the words of Greg Raden, Principal Clarinetist of the Dallas Symphony (and, incidentally, a Vandoren Artist), ?Happy singing!?
