Vandoren ZZ Tenor Saxophone ReedsVandoren ZZ tenor saxophone reeds are designed to supply what are often mutually opposing characteristics in a reed--depth of tone and immediate response. Added to this seemingly impossible solution to one of the reed musician's most enduring conundrums is the fact that ZZ reeds are free-blowing and easy to play. Impossible you say? Put the lie to this bold claim if you can. All that’s left for you to do is play to become a believer.Vandoren's ZZ reeds feature a unique relationship between the heart of the reed, where the tone is produced, and the thickness of the tip, which is responsible for vibration. The result is a reed with extraordinary tone and immediate response that is free-blowing even in the altissimo range. The ZZ reeds accomplish this immediate response without sacrificing brightness or tone quality.Professional saxophonists like L.A. recording artist Gary Foster, Delmark recording artist Frank Catalano, and many others have made the switch to Vandoren’s ZZ reeds for both live performances and studio recordings. According to a Vandoren reeds chart, ZZ reeds feel one-half strength less thick in comparison to Vandoren Traditional reeds, and run even in strength with JAVA reeds. For example, a Vandoren ZZ strength 3 reed would feel equivalent to a Vandoren Traditional in strength 2.5.

The Vandoren ZZ is the ultimate reed for all jazz and works well for classical and rock alike. Although aimed at jazz it's variability exceeds expectations. However, the tonal quality and intonation created with this high class reed in jazz, puts the "cherry on top" for all types of jazz. Being a student I obviously haven't reached my full musical and/or artistic potential, however the Vandoren ZZ jazz reed brings my musicianship to a new level. Not only would I recommend this reed for accomplished musicians but I would also recommend it for aspiring saxophonists, because it doesn't demand the tightest and most refined if embouchures it works unassumingly well as somewhat of a teaching tool for starting musicians. All and all I would recommend this reed to any and all saxophonists.
These reeds speak very well and have nice projection. The only part that players should be aware of is that these reeds tend to run soft in strength like the VanDoren Java reeds. You may find that you need to order a 1/2 to full strength higher than you would with the VanDoren Traditional reeds.
You've got to get these reeds. They produce a dry, hard, powerful, punching sound characteristic and sustain altissimo with ease. I play Guardalas on all horns and put a #3 on my Brecker II in the studio to hear what this reed really sounded like...WOW, the sound is signature hard bop and is perfect for hard blowing, horn section/funk work. I was playing RRJS for there consistency and was suffering quality. The ZZ's are as consistent and are not flat or fuzzy like the RRJS's...you'll love em'
I ordered a box of these awhile back and was surprised as to the quality. I had to chuck about 2 out but the others held up rather nicely. Right now I?m playing on a Mark VI, and it screams with these. Have a decent life span, highly recommended.
