This is a gorgeous instrument. My school happened to have four of these so I got to start bass clarinet on this amazing instrument. It has quite a price tag, but is worth it since it plays so fluidly and powerfully through all ranges. My only complaint is that it requires an unusual amount of air to get very clear sounds in the middle range (C up to Bb). The extended range allows for 4 octaves of play which is impractical in a standard arrangement, but nice if you create your own pieces.
Just received this instrument about 10 days ago and I am so happy I purchased it. The sound is so deep and wonderful. Every time I play I receive compliments. My Vito with a Bay neck joint was good, but this is great.
Most bass clarinets I come in contact with are not very good; most of them are the standard one piece plastic ones or the upper level ones that go to Eb. When I played this one I fell in love. The tone is dark and rich, it has great projection, and it has evenness in all registers. There is a cool plus, I could play a 3 octave concert Bb scale like it was no ones business. I recommend this bass to everyone I talk to I recommend it over the Buffet. It is perfect in every aspect.
This is the first Low C bass clarinet I've ever played. I also own a Selmer Paris Model 30 bass clarinet from 1973. The tone on the Yamaha is superior - the throat tones are indistinguishable from the tones just above and below, and the sound is rich and powerful across the range. Intonation is spot-on. The basset keys are laid out logically - low D on the left little finger, and low D-C#-C on the right thumb. One minor complaint is that the supplied peg is too short (I'm 5'-10" tall), but that's easily fixed with a peg for a low Eb horn.
im using one of the for a month while im on tour in rusia. (couldnt bring my privilege) of course it better than the biffet hahah. i dont really know what to say. if you battling between the buffet and the selmer, put this in the run. youll have 2 grand left over. give that to morrie backun and youll get a wooden bell and WOW
I play many Yamaha saxophones and flutes. They are all well-built, reliable, and sound great. They are also priced well and are a good value. This Low C bass clarinet is no exception. I've owned it for a year now. It is priced below Buffet and Selmer, but is capable a rich, resonant low register and a burnished upper register. I use a Fobes CF mouthpiece, but the Yamaha 4C is quite respectable and I use it with many of the harder reeds in a box that do not play well on the Fobes. The negatives? The lower register below Eb is sharp but can be "embouchured" down. The lowest C is a little "fuzzy." The standard case is badly designed, requiring you to remove the clarinet to access the storage compartment. One of the few Yamaha blunders I have experienced. So, how can I say this? In the bass clarinet world, Yamaha probably does not have the name cachet that Buffet or Selmer have (I play a Buffet R13 clarinet). But this is a solid, great sounding instrument with a few fixable intonation problems here and there. Give it a try, and if you like it, get a BAM case.
My school bought three of these. They?re wonderful. I was able to make my top band at my school and get requested for the top band at the high school this year. This instrument makes you want to play it. The sound is very rich and gives you great playing range. Double ff and pp are very easy to get.
