Best horn I ever played. I wish I could find a trumpet that played this well. Gorgeous tone and easier upper register. I have noticed that G and F# below low C tend to be a little sharper than normal, but the first and/or third valve triggers can compensate. That's why they're there.
I played every trumpet, cornet, and flugelhorn at this weekend's NKU Trumpet Day. This sweet baby won me over. It is crisp, clear, mellow, and so very easy to play. It responded well beyond my wildest dreams when I leaned into it. This is the horn for me.
I have been playing my new Xeno Cornet for about a month now. I decided on the lacquer model for a slightly mellow sound and teamed it up with my existing mouthpiece, a Yamaha 16e.
In short, this is the best cornet I have ever played and owned. The Prestige is up for sale and I am enjoying playing this great new instrument.
I hope that the new owners of Besson get it right because they have given so much to the banding world. But in my humble opinion, the centre of power in regards to Cornet manufacturing has definitely moved to the land of the rising sun.
The only thing I would want, is for Yamaha to produce a long shank version of the current mouthpiece range as I believe David king mouthpiece fits the instrument better, although it isn't my preferred choice.
I got my off- the- shelf Xeno cornet last week and couldn't be happier. I haven't had a cornet in many years and was pleasantly surprised at what a warm and sweet tone this horn has. Compared to my Bach trumpet, I do get a lot of "air balls" and "splats" which I attribute largely to lack of familiarity with the instrument. The focus of the note is wider in the cornet which lends itself to a more natural vibrato without sacrificing intonation. This instrument gives an added dimension in cornet solo playing I couldn't imagine before and lends itself perfectly to Clarke, Arbon, etc works.
