Playing lead trumpet for the 'Greatest show on Earth' is a VERY demanding job. I was perfectly content with my 6310Z and, much like Bobby Shew himself, was alittle skeptical when the word was out about Yamaha improving upon that popular lightweight horn. Well, they did it, and it's called the 8310Z!!!! It has made my job noticeably easier....and here's why: 1) The bigger bead on the bell, as well as moving the seam of the bell to the side, has made the sound BIGGER! You get nothing but pure sound at ALL dynamics and in ALL registers. 2)It's actually BRIGHTER,when you want it to be, than the 6310Z! Which is what I need to sit on top of the horn section! 3) It responds even QUICKER than the 6310Z! This is really nice 'cause you don't have to step on the gas at all for it to take off......it just goes like a fine-tuned sports car!!!! INSTANT SOUND! 4) The upper register 'holds together better' and won't break-up on you. I guess you could say that it's a more focused feel up top--you feel more 'secure.' There may be a slight adjustment period if your coming off the 6310Z, but not much. And for those of you coming off a larger horn, just lay-back on it and let the horn do the work. As we all know, it's about making trumpet playing easier, and once you play the new 8310Z, you too will believe!

I have a '47 Chicago Benge and a '47 Martin Committee and the new ShewHorn has the smoothest jazz tone that is contemporary and drips with warm overtones. The slotting on this horn is dead on..I don't even need to correct the D and F drastically to stay in tune. This horn is one flexible bugle. You can go from low F# to G above the staff like the notes were next to one another. It only took 2 hours to completely feel at home on the Shew. The valves are very fast without feeling like your fighting the mechanism. The looks are killer. What's not to like with this baby. I went from a large bore Martin to this horn and I can last way longer on this horn. Still hitting the strato notes late in the night. Great tone really smooth..no harsh or brash tone at all. and if you have the lungs it will scream without breaking up....

Yes, this horn "peels paint"... I have used several horns over the last few decades, Bach, Callichio, Kanstul, Besson, older Yamaha, Wild Thing, and Benge. This new Shew model is the cat's meow. I had tried out the older 6310 several years ago and it was too tight for me. They really opened up this horn to new heights. I tried it out of the box on a friend's new horn. Without much effort, I nailed a double high A. Having had this for a few days, it's now an easy double high C on the fly. Even better is that I can come down and play a soft, dark ballad immediately after soaring in the upper register. This is the first horn that actually hurt my ears when playing in Ferguson-Land. It will cut like no other horn out there... Don't spend a large amount of $$$ on specialty horns. This will be the only lead horn you'll ever need. FYI - I did stick a C Cap on the third valve to help slot a little more accurately.

"Great Horn!!!"

I have owned many horns, a Schilke X-3 which I loved, a Calicchio, a Monette, a couple of Bach?s, other Yamahas. This horn beats them all. This horn has an even response top to bottom. It not only sounds great playing ear-ripping lead, it has a great "bounce" to it as a jazz horn. It also blends well in concert band and brass quintet. It slots well to a double c and above, including the notorious high a. I recently had the opportunity to play a Broadway type of revue show that I had played two years earlier on another horn, the above mentioned Calicchio, which is a really good horn. There was a nasty line that was in unison with a singer that needed restraint and control that went up to an e above high c and back down into the middle register. This line gave me problems on some of the performances two years ago. This time around I nailed it every time, in tune, without a scratch for all 12 performances on the 8310z. This is a horn I ordered without play testing. I have never looked back.

HAVE BEEN PLAYING YAMAHA HORNS SINCE THE 70?S. THIS ONE IS SPECIAL. ALL I DO TO CHANGE THE COLOR IS TO CHANGE THE SIZE OF THE MOUTH PIECE, WHICH IS NO MYSTERY, BUT IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE LIKE NO OTHER HORN I HAVE PLAYED. LIGHTWEIGHT AND FUN TO PLAY. PEOPLE COMMENT ON MY TONE ALL THE TIME. I JUST SAY THANKS, BUT I KNOW THE HORN IS THE SECRET.
