Buffet Crampon R13 Vintage Professional Bb ClarinetThe Buffet R13 Bb Vintage Professional Clarinet has one conical 66mm barrel and one cylindrical barrel. It has been crafted by Buffet with silver-plated keys, undercut toneholes, specially treated polycylindrical bore, and a silver-plated adjustable thumb rest. It is crafted in high-quality unstained grenadilla wood to ensure evenness of tone and response. This clarinet is reminiscent of the original '50s R13. Buffet includes a luxurious calfskin leather pochette case with the R13 Vintage Professional Clarinet. The Buffet Vintage R13 Bb Clarinet produces a pure, focused sound that is unmistakably Buffet. Many elements were utilized on the Vintage that are not found on the modern R13. Several tone hole placements have been adjusted to improve tuning, and the bell is 1mm longer producing a very fluid clarion register. Features include full grenadilla wood body, silver-plated keys, adjustable thumb rest, and two barrels (one cylindrical, one reverse taper). Musicians of all kinds will love the Buffet R13 Vintage as it is extremely flexible, centers easily and projects well in almost any hall.In 1996, during a tour of the US and Canada, Rene Lesieux, Buffet's Research and Development Manager, fielded many requests from players who wanted a clarinet with the same feel and sound quality of the 1950's R13s. The result is a clarinet that has a great scale, a fluid sound and better response and sound emission.

I've had my R13 Vintage for about 9 years now. I got it in high school, was a music major in college, and now am a Band Director and gig around town on it. Good resistance, plays in tune, great tone quality. This is just an incredible clarinet - not much more to say.
I purchased my Vintage R13 about a year ago as a step up from my old Yamaha 650. Due to the R13 cracking a couple weeks ago, I had to play my Yamaha exclusively. Now that the R13's been fixed and I can play it again the difference is fresh in my mind, so here goes: The Pros- -Very focused tone. The sound is dark and fluid. The horn plays very easily so good tone is very achievable. -Smooth keywork. Playing this horn is very easy. Things seem to just flow out of the clarinet because you don't have to work to get out the notes that you want. This makes sight-reading a lot easier. -Nice natural look. The wood used for these clarinets is high-quality so there is no need to drench it in black finish like other horns. The Cons- -Lots of intonation issues. This clarinet tends to have the same intonation issues of most Bb clarinets, with the addition of some other ones that rarely turn up in others. For example, the C#/Ab lever is very flat on my horn. Overall, the horn plays very noticeably flat so playing in tune can be a chore at times. -Squeaky high notes. The Altissimo register will not speak very well and tends to squeak often -Upper joint is too wide. This is the biggest problem I encountered with this clarinet although it may just be a singular case with my particular instrument. When barrels are put on to the upper joint, they don't come off! The tip is too large and barrels of all sizes will not come off no matter how hard you pull. It took a month for a barrel to come off once, and another time it took 3 months. For the majority of the time that I've had this horn there's been a barrel stuck on it. I had to have the bottoms of my barrels hollowed out so that they wouldn't get stuck, but when they did I couldn't close the case and the clarinet subsequently cracked from the temperature difference. This was a major disappointment- I hope it doesn't happen to you. Okay well maybe there are a lot more con in my review than pro but I guess us musicians just like complaining about our instruments. Overall I'd say it's a good choice for any professional player looking for a dark orchestral sound. Thanks for reading!
