Giddings & Webster Chocolatero Jazz Trombone MouthpieceSimilar to a Bach 12, the Chocolatero produces a sound that cuts through the band, but retains a focused lead trombone tone.

Entering my second year as my high school jazz band's 1st trombone, I was looking for a mouthpiece that was more intended for lead playing than the Blessing 6-1/2AL that I was using just because it was the smallest one I had. I also wanted a mouthpiece that would be resilient against my skin (the plating on my 51D has started to strip after just two years of use). It is lucky, then, that I found this mouthpiece, which is fantastic.
This mouthpiece did not magically boost my range. It did, however, vastly improve my playing experience. The top of my range, while the same, is now easier to play in, and I can play there for much longer than with my old mouthpiece. The best part, though, is the sound. I can best describe it as sweet, but with a little hint of brilliance. I can now blend effortlessly with my ensemble. And, while Giddings says that this mouthpiece is a bit softer than their others, fear not: it can still produce an utterly ridiculous amount of sound.
As far as the naysayers who claim that stainless steel or titanium mouthpieces are another gimmick or false improvement in the tradition of megatones, etc. mouthpieces, I will cede that these harder metals are no revelation. But I do notice the difference in the response to the attack, and that these mouthpieces do not require plating is truly fantastic.
Overall, this mouthpiece may be more expensive than its traditional lead bone alternatives, but believe me when I say that it is absolutely worth your time to try it, and probably also your money to buy it.
