I have owned many horns in the Kanstul line-up, including a 1000, 1001, 1500, 1503, 1600, and 1601. Of these, the 1601 has been the most efficient and versatile. I split lead in three big bands and this horn fits that bill perfectly. Its copper bell produces a warm sound in the register, but the horn it really sings through in the upper register. A great horn!
It took me a while to "convert" to this horn after experimenting with mouthpieces. I finally settled on a Curry for all-around and Bob Reeves for lead. It is a very free-blowing horn. It articulates great in all registers. The upper register is very clear and in tune for the rock band gigs I play, yet it blends well in the concert type settings in which I perform. As an added bonus, I play this horn daily in front of my band students and they all think it looks really cool with its pure copper bell. Anything that helps "sell" band in my town is great! Its only real weakness is that I find I need to have the tuning slide pushed in a little farther than I do on any other horn I play on. Not usually a problem except when my rock band or marching band plays somewhere cold (like winter outside), and then I don't have much room to adjust. Hopoefully that is just me and this horn, not anyone else. Hope this helps.
This horn appealed to me because of the combination of lightweight and copper. I was looking for a horn that would respond like a lightweight, but sound like a heavyweight. This comes pretty close. The tone is fantastic, but a little to bright for what I really wanted. However, the response is impeccable and the tuning is very good throughout the register. I am used to a Getzen, so the valves seem a little noisy to me but once they are properly broken in they are a dream. Overall the horn is great. A little more of a lead horn than I was looking for but it does everything I want it to without fail. It is perfect for high register work, and the open blow really makes it sing.
