I bought this uke and after finishing it myself I really like it. It should come as a kit, including sandpaper, steel wool, some type of finish and instructions on how to set it up. Out the box it was rough and the bridge was extremely high. After a few hours of work with some sandpaper and a couple coats of finish, I finally had a nice Uke. With a little work, Washburn could have a good quality product. It's a shame they send them out the door like that.
Not a horrible little concert uke. Actually mine came setup reasonably well, but I did have to do a little filing down of the saddle as the action was a tad high, but not a big deal. The wood is, of course, plywood, and while OS says it's a satin finish, it's more like "unfinished"! I buffed it up with some 0000 steel wool and slapped a couple of coats of Minwax clear satin polycoat on it, and it looks better. Finally, as with most factory instruments, the strings suck, and should be replaced immediately. I highly recommend "Aquila" or "Worth" clear strings. Unfortunately, MF carries neither of them, but they are not hard to track down, and they really are the best uke strings available. With good strings like these, the tone was improved a great deal. Doesn't sound bad at all now- pleasant and rather quiet. For a cheap uke, this is as good as any in this price range. Recommended.
I'm a professional photographer and travel quite a bit photographing large groups of people. Often while at an event I will whip out my good ole' Oscar & rip a bit to get the crowds attention. I have stopped people in their tracks while up on my 21' Little Step Ladder... (no that's a big tall ladder)...
"This is a reasonably good sounding uke, particularly after replacig the strings with better quality GHS brand."
The previous credited to me is not what I wrote. It was from the previous contributor. However, I agree with what he said about the upper end of the neck. It is far too thick and sharp edged, which makes it difficult to play comfortably when you are at the upper frets. The only solution is to sand and re-stain that area.
