This Yani really speaks well and responds cleanly. I am really happy with the tight key work. A small problem is the high D left hand palm key- when playing really fast runs my hand would get poked with the point at the top of the palm key. After a lot of playing time my hand would hurt. However, don't let that small item keep you from trying this horn. A great discovery is that the horn is in tune throughout the entire chromatic scale- I am really pleased about that. The bronze coating creates a mellow sounding horn. The supplied mouthpiece is actually a good one. My favorite set up with this horn is with a Selmer C* mouthpiece and Alexander Superial reeds. I purchased this Yani as an upgrade to my Yamaha 62 Alto. So, overall an excellent saxophone; in tune, tight key work, and a mellow responsive voice. You will not be disappointed - especially with the bronze coating. Thank You for reading my review.
I have had my A992 for almost a year and to be completely honest I can't get enough of it. All of the notes are highly accessible and with the right mouthpiece and reed you could go a long way with this sax. Before buying this instrument I tested all of the highly recommended names and found that none of them could stand up to the Yanagisawa. After playing this sax for 5 months I made All-State and found that out of the four All-state saxes three of us played on a Yanagisawa saxophone.
When I started playing saxophone in college, I knew i needed to get myself a professional horn. Now, a year after purchasing the Yanagisawa 992, I couldn't be happier. I test played everything else out there: Yamaha Z, Selmer series II and III, Selmer reference 54, etc. This horn gives the greatest versatility of sound and also amazing action on the keys. Put a selmer C* on this baby and it sounds amazing for chamber music. Put a meyer on for jazz and this saxophone sings like and 82Z. Plus the tone is absolutely outstanding and so is the ease of playing altissimo. I am currently working on the Denisov Sonata for Alto Saxophone and cello and this horn is more than a match for that piece. This is THE best horn you can buy....period.
The feel of the horn is the best I have used. The keys are close together and do not have to be pushed very far to close them, which is great for fast tunes. The only complaint I would have is that it is difficult to get a raw tone. Classical/smooth tones come easy.
This horn produces a dark and warm sound, even with inverted ligatures and bright mouthpieces. The tone this horn enables a musician to produce is unique, but still blends well in a full ensemble. It also sounds great for solo performances.
