This horn produces a dark and warm sound, even with inverted ligatures and bright mouthpieces. The tone this horn enables a musician to produce is unique, but still blends well in a full ensemble. It also sounds great for solo performances.
The rumors are true! The Yanagisawa A-992 is in fact the all mighty god it's said to be. I've tried many upon many of different alto's and this is by far the best. The Bronze body, neck and bell give the sax a warm, creamy tone that will make anyone jealous as you play a classical piece. This saxophone is dark and warm sounding with PERFECT intonation. Any and all yanagisawa saxophones have perfect intonation and quality key work. This particular sax is designed to be the top notch killer of the classical world. No sax can match its beautiful dark sound and it's colorful rich tone. I use this sax only for classical because it is so perfectly designed for it's purpose that is is arguable TOO dark and TOO warm for Jazz. I use my Yanagisawa A-9937 with an entirely solid silver body for jazz because it produces a brighter, more colorful tone. The response is equally incredible on both horns.
When I started playing saxophone in college, I knew i needed to get myself a professional horn. Now, a year after purchasing the Yanagisawa 992, I couldn't be happier. I test played everything else out there: Yamaha Z, Selmer series II and III, Selmer reference 54, etc. This horn gives the greatest versatility of sound and also amazing action on the keys. Put a selmer C* on this baby and it sounds amazing for chamber music. Put a meyer on for jazz and this saxophone sings like and 82Z. Plus the tone is absolutely outstanding and so is the ease of playing altissimo. I am currently working on the Denisov Sonata for Alto Saxophone and cello and this horn is more than a match for that piece. This is THE best horn you can buy....period.
The feel of the horn is the best I have used. The keys are close together and do not have to be pushed very far to close them, which is great for fast tunes. The only complaint I would have is that it is difficult to get a raw tone. Classical/smooth tones come easy.
It's an amazing sax. I looked at the whole Selmer line and just about every other brand out there too but this was still the creme de la creme. The included mouthpeice is actually pretty decentbut when you inevitably upgrade try more than just the C*. I settled on a Russeau mouthpeice and a inverted bonade ligature. With my set up I ended up with an amazing classical sax. I am complimented on my beautiful full tone all the time. Yani all the way!
I have had my A992 for almost a year and to be completely honest I can't get enough of it. All of the notes are highly accessible and with the right mouthpiece and reed you could go a long way with this sax. Before buying this instrument I tested all of the highly recommended names and found that none of them could stand up to the Yanagisawa. After playing this sax for 5 months I made All-State and found that out of the four All-state saxes three of us played on a Yanagisawa saxophone.
This Yani really speaks well and responds cleanly. I am really happy with the tight key work. A small problem is the high D left hand palm key- when playing really fast runs my hand would get poked with the point at the top of the palm key. After a lot of playing time my hand would hurt. However, don't let that small item keep you from trying this horn. A great discovery is that the horn is in tune throughout the entire chromatic scale- I am really pleased about that. The bronze coating creates a mellow sounding horn. The supplied mouthpiece is actually a good one. My favorite set up with this horn is with a Selmer C* mouthpiece and Alexander Superial reeds. I purchased this Yani as an upgrade to my Yamaha 62 Alto. So, overall an excellent saxophone; in tune, tight key work, and a mellow responsive voice. You will not be disappointed - especially with the bronze coating. Thank You for reading my review.
I had to go through a gruesome process of trying out many different horns before I settled on Yanagisawas. I would still recommend anyone wanting a new horn to try out different ones to see what you like in a sax. For me, Yanagisawas are absolutely perfect. This particular model has just what I wanted: a full, dark tone, close keys, great intonation on every note, and an amazing look. As for the accessories, it comes with a vandoren classic reed and a great mouthpiece, along with the usual care products. My personal jazz setup on this horn includes a Meyer mouthpiece and Vandoren ZZ reeds. Overall, this is the best horn that I have EVER played on, and I know that anyone can go a long way with this sax.
I have owned this saxophone now for a year and I love it. It has a clear sound that can be made bright or dark depending on the mouthpiece and reed. It has enough versitility to be used for jazz as well as classical. Intonation is good but could be better. On my horn, A above the staff always sounds stuffy no matter which reed or mouthpice is used. Overall the sound is good and I have been impressed with this horn.
